In September 2024, we opened the doors of The Mitre with a fairly ridiculous idea, to turn an old pub in Abertillery into a grassroots live music venue and community space.
Since then, we've welcomed bands from across Wales, the UK, Sweden, USA, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago and all over the world, alongside local musicians playing some of their very first gigs. We've hosted punk, metal, rock, folk, blues and plenty of things we're still not entirely sure how to categorise.
The Mitre Music Venue is run as a Community Interest Company. We're not here to make shareholders rich. Any money we make goes straight back into keeping the venue going.
And right now, we need some help.
We desperately need a new boiler
Our current boiler is reaching the end of its life.
Anyone who has ever tried to heat an old pub will understand why this is slightly terrifying.
A reliable, efficient boiler isn't glamorous, but it means a warm venue for our customers, musicians, staff and the community groups who use the building, and hopefully lower running costs for us too.
We need to improve our soundproofing
We're a live music venue in the middle of a town.
Unsurprisingly, we occasionally make some noise.
We want to invest in additional soundproofing for the venue's windows so that we can keep putting on brilliant live music while reducing the amount of sound escaping from the building.
Better soundproofing doesn't just benefit our neighbours, It helps protect the long term future of The Mitre as a music venue.
Our target: £2,000
We're hoping to raise £2,000 towards:
Replacing our aging boiler
Additional window soundproofing
Installation, materials and associated work
Every penny raised will be used to improve and protect The Mitre.
If we manage to smash the target, anything left will stay within The Mitre Music Venue CIC and be reinvested into maintaining and improving the venue.
❤️ Why save a little music venue?
Small grassroots venues are where bands learn their craft.
They're where someone plays their first gig.
They're where touring bands can actually afford to stop.
They're where people discover music they would never have heard otherwise.
And they're increasingly difficult to keep alive.
We've somehow managed to build one here in Abertillery and we'd really quite like to keep it.
If you've ever played here, watched a band here, had a pint here, danced here, rehearsed here, attended a community group here, met someone here, or simply believe that towns like ours deserve independent places for music and creativity, please consider chucking a few quid into the pot.
£5 helps. £10 helps. £20 helps. Sharing this fundraiser helps.
You don't need to give a fortune.
There are enough of us that nobody should have to.
Thank you for supporting grassroots music.
