Help the McBrayer Family Restore Access to Water

The McBrayer family (Anya, Jason, 10yo Jackson, 5yo Cooper) recently moved into what they hoped would be their forever home, only to be met with an unimaginable and overwhelming challenge: no reliable access to water. After moving in, they discovered that the shared well serving their home was not functional enough to support even one household, much less two.

Determined to fix the issue, they made the difficult and expensive decision to drill a new well. That process required drilling down to 585 feet, yielding only one gallon per minute. After the system was fully installed, it was heartbreakingly determined to be a dry well, producing no usable water at all.

Despite this outcome, the family is still responsible for the full cost of the failed well, totaling over $30,000. With no water access, they were faced with drilling a third well just to make their home livable. That well was drilled today (1/22/26), only to find it too produced no water. They must cover the full cost of this new well. The total cost will now be $50,000.

Dry wells are EXTREMELY rare, so the fact that this has occurred twice on their property is unheard of, and totally devastating.

The family has been without running water for well over two weeks, an incredibly stressful and exhausting situation for anyone to endure. They are researching whether connecting to Durham city water could be an option—an alternative that would also come with an additional and significant financial burden.

Adding to the weight of this situation, the McBrayers are the heart and hands behind One Fun Gal Flower Farm, a small local flower farm serving the South Durham community. Their goal has always been to bring joy and smiles during hard times by providing beautiful, locally grown flowers to the community. Now, after a truly unfortunate string of bad luck, they are facing an overwhelming personal and financial crisis of their own. Without water, One Fun Gal Farm will be unable to continue.

Jason is a dedicated EMT with Durham County, and is a living organ donor. In 2021, he donated two-thirds of his liver to Anya's best friend.
