On Thursday, February 17th, 2022, the community of Jewett, Ohio was hit with terrible Flash Flooding. One of the families that suffered tremendous loss was my brother Mike McBee and his children, Kat and Kiera. The water entered the apartment swiftly and was knee-high in most rooms; their apartment is a complete loss.
Mike, who is also the Village of Jewett Administrator, was able to get Kat and Kiera out safely around 10 PM, right around the time that the water started rushing into the apartment. He then continued to work and assist the community overnight to help others before he dealt with his own situation. He is one half of a two-man team that takes care of Jewett, alongside his co-worker, Justin Niggemyer. Justin and his wife, Christina, didn’t hesitate to offer them shelter when they had to leave the apartment.
Mike was able to get into the apartment Friday to assess the extent of the damage. All furniture (with the possible exception of the bunk bed frame Kat and Kiera used) is ruined. All personal items, clothing, shoes, and basic necessities are ruined. They also lost a car that was not able to be moved before the flood hit it.
At this time Mike, Kat, and Kiera are planning to stay with family and friends as the apartment undergoes repairs. However, this will be a continued jumping around process, as the time frame of the repairs is not known at this time.
Anyone who knows Mike or sees him around the village knows he is an extremely hard worker. He continues to demonstrate this fact, as he has been working non-stop with the residence of Jewett and other organizations to clean up the disaster. Despite this, his main job is, and always has been, being a Dad. Kat and Kiera are his weak spot and he would do anything for them.
Fortunately, their 3-year-old cat and Kiera’s best friend, named Eli, was found completely unharmed the next day on a very high shelf in the McBee’s apartment.
At this time, I ask that you show Mike, Kat, and Kiera as much kindness and support as you can, while they navigate one of the biggest times of need that they have ever experienced. If needed, you can contact me or Mike through Facebook Messenger.
