Help the Mango School Children in Tanzania

Hi, We are Javier & Olga and we are currently in a small village in the southwest of rural Tanzania. We are with our friend Maurus, the director of LESCOTA Org, a local charity that is building a local school for the children of the nearby villages. Together we are trying to get enough funds to improve the local school facilities in order to provide a better environment for the children so they can have a bright future. The goal of this campaign is to continue the amazing work Maurus has been doing for the local community to complete the construction of the community building, kitchen, sanitation facilities and much more.

Life here is quite different from our hometown, Dublin (Ireland). We don’t have a fridge, oven, warm water or other basic things but we consider ourselves lucky since we do have a roof over our heads, food on the table, access to clean water, internet and medicines. These are luxuries that many people here do not have. Malnutrition, poor sanitation and lack of medical facilities are problems visible in all the villages we've visited. Malaria is also present in the area, causing many deaths, especially of children, which is heartbreaking.
Our time here so far has been wonderful, everyone has been incredibly kind and welcoming and each day we are learning more and more about this amazing country. We want to do this campaign to help the local community that has treated us so kindly. This is why we are running this fundraising, to help the most vulnerable: the children, in order to provide the most basic needs to get the education they require to have the future they deserve.
We’ve been collaborating with Maurus for a few years, as a director of Lescota, he has worked very hard in planning and building Mango School among many other activities. Mango School started in 2019 with the construction of just two classrooms, as of today there are already 8 classrooms, a staffroom block, a girls' dormitory block, storeroom, and they have started the construction of the kitchen and dining hall. Currently, there are 180 children enrolled in the school.
We have done several fundraising campaigns previously with Maurus; in the last one in December, we raised funds to support the construction of the community center, but this is the first time we are using the GoFundMe platform.
Our goal for this campaign is to raise funds for the following:
- Furnishing the new community center adding tables, chairs and other small items so it can be used as a dining room for the children and to cater events for the community. We need at least 25 tables and 200 chairs.
- Completing the school kitchen by installing new cooking stoves, buying new pots and other kitchenware to improve sanitation for the school children. Currently, meals are cooked using firewood and children eat on the floor.
- Construction of latrines for the girl's dormitory. Currently, toilets are overcrowded; we need to build new ones and improve the current facilities.
- Upgrade the girl's dormitory by adding a ceiling, installing tiles and painting the building to provide a safe and healthy space for girls to sleep in decent conditions.
- Buy books and other school supplies for the Mango School children.
There are also plans to build a new boy's dormitory, if we surpass our goal any extra funds will be used towards the construction of the new dormitory.
As part of this campaign, we will be doing and sharing with you different activities to help raise funds, the first one will be a 50km trek to Mbanba bay, follow us to keep up to date with the activities while we run the campaign.

No tenemos nevera, horno, agua caliente y otras cosas básicas, pero nos consideramos afortunados ya que tenemos un techo sobre nuestra cabeza, comida en la mesa, acceso a agua limpia, internet y medicamentos. Estos son lujos que la mayoría de la gente aquí no tiene. La desnutrición, las penosas condiciones de vida y la falta de instalaciones médicas son problemas claramente visibles en todas las aldeas que hemos visitado. La malaria también está presente en la zona, causando muchas muertes, especialmente de niños pequeños, lo cual es desgarrador.
El tiempo que llevamos aquí nos ha cambiado la vida, todo el mundo ha sido increíblemente amable y cada día estamos aprendiendo más y más sobre este increíble país. Queremos hacer esta campaña para ayudar a la gente del pueblo que nos ha tratado tan bien. Por eso estamos haciendo este GoFundMe, para ayudar a los más vulnerables: los niños, con el fin de satisfacer sus necesidades más básicas para obtener la educación necesaria para tener el futuro que se merecen.
Hemos estado colaborando con Maurus durante algunos años, como director de Lescota, ha trabajado muy duro en la planificación y construcción del colegio Mango School entre muchas otras actividades. Mango School comenzó en 2019 con la construcción de solo dos aulas, ahora ya hay 8 aulas, un bloque de sala de profesores, un bloque de dormitorios para niñas, un almacén, y han comenzado la construcción de la cocina y el comedor. Nuestro objetivo para esta campaña es recaudar fondos para lo siguiente:
- Amueblar el nuevo centro comunitario/comunidad de vecinos añadiendo mesas, sillas y otras cosas para que pueda ser utilizado como comedor para los niños y para los eventos para la gente del pueblo. Se necesitas 25 mesas y 200 sillas.
- Completar la cocina de la escuela instalando nuevas cocinas, comprando ollas y otros utensilios de cocina para mejorar las condiciones del comedor de los niños. Actualmente, las comidas se cocinan con leña y los niños comen en el suelo.
- Construcción de letrinas para el dormitorio de las niñas. Actualmente, los baños están abarrotados; Necesitamos construir otros nuevos y mejorar las instalaciones actuales.
- Mejoras del dormitorio de las niñas añadiendo un techo, instalando azulejos y pintando el edificio para proporcionar un espacio seguro y saludable para que las niñas duerman en buenas condiciones.
- Comprar libros y otros artículos para los niños de Mango School.
También hay planes para construir un nuevo dormitorio para niños, si superamos nuestro objetivo, se utilizarán fondos adicionales para la construcción del nuevo dormitorio.
