Help Karaleigh Breathe Easier: Support Her Journey with PIBO
Karaleigh, a sweet and strong 9-year-old, was once an active little girl who loved playing softball, basketball, swimming, and running cross country. But in August 2024, everything changed. What started as a case of pneumonia led to multiple hospital stays, countless tests, and, finally, a heartbreaking diagnosis in November—Post-Infectious Bronchiolitis Obliterans (PIBO).
PIBO is a rare, irreversible lung disease that causes permanent scarring and obstruction in the airways. This condition has drastically altered Karaleigh’s life. She now requires oxygen therapy 24/7, relies on a wheelchair outside the home, and has been unable to attend school or participate in the activities she once loved.
Despite these challenges, Karaleigh continues to fight with incredible strength. She undergoes monthly hospital admissions at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for treatments, has consulted specialists at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and will soon visit the Cleveland Clinic for alternative therapies to reduce inflammation. While there is no cure for PIBO, we are doing everything possible to slow its progression and give Karaleigh the best quality of life.
A Family Who Gives So Much to Others
Karaleigh’s parents, Dustin and Katie, are pillars of the Erie community. Her father, Dustin, serves as a police officer for the City of Erie, dedicating his life to protecting and serving others. Her mother, Katie, is a registered nurse at UPMC Hamot, providing compassionate care to those in need.
Now, this incredible family—who has spent their lives helping others—needs our help. The financial burden of Karaleigh’s medical care, travel expenses, specialized equipment, and home modifications has been overwhelming.
How You Can Help:
Any donation—no matter how big or small—will go directly toward:
- Medical expenses and treatments not covered by insurance
- Travel and lodging for out-of-state medical visits
- Equipment to improve Karaleigh’s mobility and comfort
- Home adjustments to ensure she can move safely and freely
Let’s give back to a family that has given so much to Erie. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing Karaleigh’s story to help spread awareness.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for standing with us on this journey.
