My name is Susan Greer. I live and grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
The picture you see of my precious family is one they always take together when they visit from South Carolina and make the trip to Ocean City, Maryland to get their favorite, Thrasher's French Fries.
On Friday, September 27, 2024, Hurricane Helene struck Spartanburg, South Carolina, where my family resides.
A large oak tree fell through their house, right into their bedroom, landing in the middle of their bed, destroying their beautiful, historic home. By the grace of God, minutes prior they had quickly had my niece come downstairs, and they had left their bedroom in fear of the tree falling. If this had occurred in the middle of the night, the tree would have fallen on them, crushing them.
Their home is destroyed, two of their cars are totaled, and they are devastated. They were able to salvage their clothes and personal items, praise God. They have a large support system in Spartanburg through their church family and work families who quickly came to assist them when this tragedy occurred. I have never felt so helpless to be so far away and getting the phone call from my brother where I could not even understand what he was saying because he was so hysterical.
He is my one and only sibling. We lost our parents at a very young age, and I can't imagine how if this scenario played out another way, I would be planning their funerals.
Instead, with a grateful heart, where many have lost so much because of Hurricane Helene, through prayer and faith, and an extended period of time, they can rebuild their lives and home. However, currently, they are in the process of finding a long-term rental, they must rehome one of their three precious dogs because they cannot have three dogs in a long-term rental, and the unknown of this whole process is overwhelming. They are still in shock trying to process what has taken place and I am praying that this GoFundMe will somehow help them with the process of rebuilding their lives and bless them as they mean so very much to me.
There are so many factors in this story, including the trauma that has occurred, knowing they will not spend the holidays in their home this year, they have no clue where to begin, where they will live, etc. The most important fact is material items can be replaced, but precious lives and family cannot.
Again, while I know there has been so much loss and sadness with the effects of this hurricane, I am praying you will consider donating to my family. I know they are humble and would never expect anything, but they are more than grateful for anything, even if you can just lift them in prayer. Thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart.
