In 2022 Jess, Stacey, and Connor made the move to South Carolina and the plan was for Jess to find a local job to come off the road. For 14 years, Jess has worked in jobs that kept him away from home for days and even weeks at a time. However, 2022 did not start as planned. In February of 2022, Jess had a heart attack while driving his tanker truck through Kentucky. This put him out of work for a few months. Jess was able to come off the road for good in October 2022 and he started working for the state in December.
In 2023 during a new patient checkup, it was noted that Jess had a low Hemoglobin number. The normal number should be between 14 to 18, and at this time, Jess’s number was 8. He was having his numbers checked twice a week for two weeks and it continued to drop. He was referred to a Hemoglobin specialist. After a bone marrow test was completed, they found that Jess has Myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS for short. He was on the spectrum of acute leukemia.
The first important steps were to go through chemo shots and get him out of the spectrum of acute leukemia. Jess has been going through chemo shots that are five days straight, every three weeks. After he was out of danger of acute leukemia, they needed to find a match for a stem cell transplant. Jess has been going through blood transfusions every few weeks since November and both of his older boys have been tested to be a match for stem cell transplant. On January 9, 2024, they finally heard that one of the boys was a match! The transplant is tentatively set for the end of February.
Jess will be in the hospital for a minimum of one month and has been told that he will be out of work for six months to one year after the transplant. Jess has always been a hard worker who takes care of his family. Jess has three older boys who live in Illinois, an older stepdaughter who lives in Pennsylvania, and Connor who is 12 years old. During his time off, Jess loves watching Connor play baseball. Stacey works full-time as a Revenue Cycle Specialist for a physical therapy company and is doing her best to make ends meet during this difficult time.
