Emergency Support Needed: The Hurd Family Legacy - A Historic Military Home Lost in Eaton Canyon Fire
Our community was devastated when the Eaton Canyon fire swept through Altadena, destroying the beloved Hurd family home - a property that has been a cornerstone of friendship and community since 1967. This cherished home was purchased by Emmett and Betty Hurd after their proud service in the Army during World War II, beginning a legacy that would span three generations through their son, Retired U.S. Marine Steven, and his wife Beth, to their grandsons, Retired U.S. Marine Victor, former Sailor Mitchel, and Travis.
For over five decades, the Hurd home was more than just a house - it was where Emmett and Betty's dream of creating a gathering place for friends and family came to life. Through Steven and Beth's years of stewarding this family legacy, and now into Victor's generation, this home has been a beacon of hospitality where countless friendships were forged and strengthened.
Now, the devastating Eaton Canyon fire has taken not just a structure, but a piece of Altadena history that held within its walls the story of the Hurd family's journey: Emmett and Betty's return from World War II service, Steven and Beth's dedication to maintaining their parents' legacy of community service, and Victor's childhood memories of growing up in a home that always had its doors open to friends and neighbors.
Lost in the fire were irreplaceable treasures: Emmett and Betty's World War II memorabilia, decades of family photographs documenting the Hurds' journey through American history, military service medals, and countless items that told the story of three generations of this remarkable family.
While insurance will eventually help with some costs, the loss of this multi-generational gathering place requires immediate community support for:
• Essential daily necessities for the family
• Replacement of vital documents and personal items
• Creating a new space where the Hurd family's tradition of gathering and friendship can continue
Since 1967, this home has been more than just another house in Altadena - it was where Emmett and Betty's vision of a welcoming community space came to life, where Steven and Beth raised their family, and where Victor grew up surrounded by the warmth of friendship and community.
Target Goal: $50,000 This will help cover immediate needs and provide crucial support as the Hurds work to provide not just a house, but a home that can once again serve as a gathering place for friends, family, and community.
How You Can Help:
1. Donate to support the Hurd family during this crucial time
2. Share this campaign with others who understand the importance of preserving family legacies
3. Help us get back to a place where new memories can be made, and friendships can continue to flourish
A Note from Victor Hurd: "Our home has been the heart of our family's story for over 50 years, beginning with my grandparents Emmett and Betty after their World War II service. Through my parents Steven and Beth, and into my own life, this house has been more than just a building - it has been a gathering place where friendships blossomed, and community bonds strengthened. While we lost the physical structure, we carry forward my grandparents' spirit of hospitality and service. Your support will help us create a new space where we can continue their legacy of bringing people together. Every act of kindness reminds us that the community spirit that made our house a home lives on."
Updates will be posted regularly as we work to help the Hurd family recover a space that can once again serve as a center of friendship and community. Every donation helps preserve not just a home, but a cherished gathering place that has meant so much to so many.
Thank you for supporting our family during this challenging time. Together, we can help create a new chapter while honoring the legacy of friendship and community that Emmett and Betty Hurd began in Altadena over half a century ago.
