The Huinker family was looking forward to a joyful December and New Year. Both Jennifer and Eric were planning on starting new jobs. Eric was to start on December 9th and Jennifer on December 16th.
However, on Sunday, December 1st, Eric suffered a serious heart attack and was in critical condition. There wasn't much they could do for him at the hospital in Des Moines, so he was transferred to the University of Nebraska Hospital on December 7th and had major open-heart surgery on the 10th. Doctors discovered a dissection of the aorta and a blood clot in the upper left atrium of his heart. He had an aortic replacement, and things were looking up. But, since then, it has been a rollercoaster for the Huinker family. Eric has been on a ventilator for over 22 days and has been trying to get adjusted to meds. He's gone through AFIB, asthma attacks, infections, and most recently, a colon bleed that caused him to lose a tremendous amount of blood. They think they got it fixed; however, if it opens back up, they will have to remove some of his colon. He will be getting a temporary/permanent trachea in the next day or so.
It will be a long road to recovery for Eric. He will most likely have to have inpatient rehabilitation.
To make matters more challenging, Eric's job offer was rescinded. Their health insurance from Jennifer's previous job will end on January 1st. She is slated to start her new job on January 6th, but insurance won't start until March. They will have to get COBRA insurance, which is insanely expensive!
The Huinker family is facing an overwhelming financial burden due to these unforeseen medical expenses, and they urgently need help to cover the cost of Eric's care. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated!
