Help the Higgins-Roberts Family

Jeremiah 17:14
Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.

As some of you know, my brother (Jim) and his husband (Dan) were involved in a serious auto crash in Michigan in late January. Thankfully, the kids were not with them. Both sustained severe injuries and have a long road of recovery ahead of them. Jim was discharged the night of the crash and is currently under orthopedic care back at home. His injuries include, but are not limited to, a fractured shoulder and six rib fractures. His doctors hope he can start physical therapy in the next 5-6 weeks. Dan was unfortunately unluckier and sustained extensive injuries that include a head laceration, shattered hip, broken femur, broken ankle, three broken ribs, and three fractured vertebrates in his neck. He spent 10 days in trauma care in the hospital and another 16 days at a rehab hospital before he was able to return home for further treatment in Illinois. Both are facing a long road of recovery, physically and emotionally. Dan won’t be able to start physical therapy for 4-6 months, if he is able to begin weight bearing on his right side. In addition, he is also suffering from a brain injury.

Dan is the primary source of income for the household. He is working under contract for a consulting firm. Most time-off is unpaid and short-term disability is not available. Jim is newly employed as of June of 2021. He had just under a week of paid time-off accrued. Nothing close to the time he will need to heal from this unfortunate incident.

The crash has caused an immediate financial burden to their family. Michigan is a “No-fault” auto insurance state. No-fault insurance means that if you're injured in a car accident, your own car insurance coverage will pay some, or all, of your economic losses, regardless of who was at fault for the crash. Because of the recent reform, nonresidents no longer qualify for no-fault. This means Dan and Jim are responsible for all their own hospital bills, medical equipment, and medications during their healing time. They have already paid out-of-pocket for installation of a wheelchair ramp to get Dan in and out of the house and a stair lift. This in addition to several prescriptions and medical equipment needed at home.

Please keep my brother and his family in your thoughts and prayers during their time of healing. This experience has been very traumatic. The financial toll this has placed on their family is overwhelming and stressful. We are asking for donations of any amount towards their cause. Every dollar or share will help!

Thank you!
