Update from the Hethke Family..."The time has come to give you all the update on our Mighty Little Leni. Sadly, her bone marrow biopsy came back positive for Leukemia. And has proven once again that it is an aggressive beast of a cancer, even though she looks as healthy and happy as ever. Her marrow chimerism also showed that her cells are only 94% donor DNA which tells us that her disease is winning against Keith’s cells. Her leukemia doctor and transplant doctor met and unfortunately do not have any further curative treatment to offer. Leni has already received the most agressive treatment available worldwide with transplant, as her protocol was one of the newest that is typically used for patients who have already relapsed. We could chose to give more treatment, which we know would only make her weak and uncomfortable, and could buy us more time. But with this decision, we would once again be hospitalized and our family unit separated. Leni is so full of life and joy at this time, and this may continue for some time. We just don’t know. The doctors best estimate that we have less than 6 months before she will succumb to this monster we call cancer. Our hope is that we can bring her home before Christmas and spend as much time in our home together. St. Jude will be working with us this coming week to find available pediatric hospice services in our area. Of course we continue to pray and plead with God for a miracle, and we ask that you all do the same. We are not ready to say goodbye to this little warrior, nor will we ever be. Please know we love all of you and are honored to share Leni’s journey with you. Your support and love from afar is felt by all of us. Some way and some how we will get through this, however impossible it may seem."
Contributions to date have been greatly appreciated but the Hethke family still needs your help to care for Leni when she comes home. Thank you all for your continued support. As always, thoughts and prayers are appreciated.
