Help the Haughton Family Rebuild After Fire

Dear friends, family, and kind-hearted community,

Early this September, our family’s world was turned upside down when a fire broke out in our kitchen, leaving our home and family devastated and in need of your support. The fire caused massive damage to our house, and, more tragically, one of our loved ones was injured and had to be hospitalized. It’s been a difficult year for us on many fronts, and we’re reaching out today to ask for your help as we navigate this crisis.

A grease fire spread throughout our kitchen, and in a matter of moments, our home was engulfed in flames, and the smoke spread quickly throughout. A couple of our family members inhaled smoke and had to be rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, they are receiving care, but the recovery process will take time.

This disaster is only the latest chapter in what has already been a tough year. Between this fire and a series of unexpected challenges, we are struggling to stay afloat.

Earlier this year, federal funding pauses and interruptions in payments from the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program forced several of the markets we were contracted to deliver produce to shut down, which in turn caused significant disruptions in cash flow. These markets accounted for a substantial portion of our income. With the loss of several of them, we have been forced to pivot and seek out new outlets, but our capacity to sell much of our produce has been greatly reduced. The resulting financial gap has been devastating—especially when compounded by the significant costs of recovering from the fire.

This tragedy has left us not only with emotional pain but also financial burdens. Here’s a breakdown of the immediate expenses we are facing:

  • Production and Labor Disruption: Our family relies on the day-to-day operations of our farm to make a living. With our family members recovering and the added stress of navigating this situation, we have lost crucial labor time, which has added an unexpected financial strain.
  • Trailer and Port-o-potty Purchase: Because our home is not currently livable, we must purchase a trailer to house farming equipment and have access to a working bathroom. Additionally, we must provide housing for the folks who labor with us on the land.
  • Food & Cooking: Without a kitchen, we’ve been unable to prepare meals at home. For the time being, we are forced to rely on takeout, restaurants, and other temporary solutions, which have been costly and unsustainable for a family of our size.
  • Loss of Possessions: The fire destroyed several invaluable items and utilities in our home, which we rely on for our livelihood. Replacing these items will be a long and costly process.
  • Hotel Costs: Since the fire has left our home uninhabitable, we’ve had to stay in temporary accommodations. The costs of staying in a hotel while we try to rebuild are mounting, and we are hoping to minimize this financial burden as much as possible.
  • Medical Bills: The medical expenses from the hospital stay for our family members are financially overwhelming. Although insurance will cover part of the costs, we are left with substantial personal expenses not covered by insurance.

We don’t take your generosity lightly. If you can donate, we are incredibly grateful. If you’re unable to contribute financially, please share our story and keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for being a part of our journey and for helping us get back on our feet during this challenging time.

With deep love and appreciation,
