Hello all, my name is Adriel and I'm writing on behalf of me, my mother Juliana and my brother Rafael.
My mom has been suffering thru many medical hurdles lately and needs help with living expenses and medical bills.
She was diagnosed with Lupus as a teen, was given 6 months to live then and has had many complication because of it thru the years. From kidney issues, including kidney failure years ago, to numerous bladder infections that are immune to antibiotics, high blood pressure, diabetes, she has a very immunocompromised system.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, she was laid off her job which was a blessing in disguise because with her immune system so weak, she was likely to suffer very badly or worse, if she caught Covid. My brother and I were also subjected to staying home with her because we couldn’t run the risk of catching it and exposing her. In late 2021, she went back to work, only to be short lived because of a heart attack that came unexpected in mid- 2022 at the age of 42. She was laid off her job in late 2022. That attack resulted in 2 stents in her heart with a second surgery to remove another blockage in her heart a year later. The medication that she was given (blood thinners) brought another set of hurdles since the side effect of it was heavy menstrual bleeding to the point of needing iron infusions every 2 weeks to replenish nutrients she was losing. Between mid- 2023 and early 2024, she developed severe headaches and a slurred speech with prompted her doctors to perform a MRI only to find she had a tumor in her brain. She recently had the surgery to remove the tumor and is now in rehab to relearn to use utensils and walk without a walker. She’s doing fine overall but has memory issues and concentration issues resulting from surgery. On top of that, she’s been doing infusions to stabilize the lupus, so it doesn’t flair up too much, it’s at high flair right now with all the procedures and medications. She has a hysterectomy to be done as soon as she’s recovered from the brain surgery because she has a high risk for cervical/ uterine/ovarian/bladder cancer to develop.
At the moment, we are living in a shelter. During the heavy rain storm that flooded a big part in Queens, NY in 2022, we found out that the apartment we were living in was an illegal rent and not regulated by the city as livable space. In mid-2023 we had to vacate the apartment and started living in shelters provided by the city. I had to drop out of college (I was living away), to come back to take care of her after her first heart surgery. I have been doing part time jobs but it’s very difficult to handle all of that. She tries to keep my spirits up but it’s still a lot to take on at such a young age for all of us. The rehab facility she’s in right now is far away and we don’t have the funds to see her all the times we want to. Working part time and at a lower wage only makes the situation more difficult, since we don’t have a permanent living space and could be moved at any time.
She’s thankful to be alive and my brother and I are happy to have our mother with us but right now, we need everyone’s help. She doesn’t have any family around, her sister lives in Brazil, her elderly mother lives in Spain. My brother and I also don’t have family to support us at all. Any help would be appreciated. Desde problemas renais, incluindo insuficiência renal há anos, até inúmeras infecções da bexiga que são imunes a antibióticos, hipertensão arterial, diabetes, ela tem um sistema muito imunocomprometido. Quando a pandemia atingiu em 2020, ela foi despedida do emprego, o que foi uma bênção disfarçada porque, com o seu sistema imunologico tão fraco, era provável que sofresse muito ou pior, se contraísse Covid. Meu irmão e eu também fomos obrigados a ficar em casa com ela porque corríamos o risco de pegar e expôr minha mãe a doença. No final de 2021, ela voltou ao trabalho, mas foi por pouco tempo, devido a um ataque cardíaco inesperado em meados de 2022, aos 42 anos. Ela foi demitida no final de 2022. Esse ataque resultou em 2 stents em seu coração com uma segunda cirurgia para remover outro bloqueio em seu coração um ano depois. A medicação que ela recebeu (anticoagulantes) trouxe outro conjunto de obstáculos, já que o efeito colateral era sangramento menstrual intenso a ponto de precisar de infusões de ferro a cada 2 semanas para repor os nutrientes que ela estava perdendo. Entre meados de 2023 e o início de 2024, ela desenvolveu fortes dores de cabeça e uma fala arrastada que levou seus médicos a realizar uma ressonância magnética, apenas para descobrir que ela tinha um tumor no cérebro. Recentemente, ela fez a cirurgia para retirada do tumor e agora está em reabilitação para reaprender a usar utensílios e andar sem andador. Ela está bem no geral, mas tem problemas de memória e concentração resultantes da cirurgia. Além disso, ela está fazendo infusões para estabilizar o lúpus, para que não piore mais sua saùde, pois o Lupus está ativo por causa de todos os procedimentos e medicamentos. Ela tem que fazer uma histerectomia assim que se recuperar da cirurgia no cérebro porque ela tem um alto risco de desenvolver câncer cervical/uterino/ovário/bexiga. No momento estamos morando em um abrigo. Durante a forte tempestade que inundou grande parte do Queens, NY em 2022, descobrimos que o apartamento em que morávamos era um aluguel ilegal e não regulamentado pela cidade como espaço habitável. Em meados de 2023 tivemos que desocupar o apartamento e passamos a morar em abrigos cedidos pela prefeitura. Tive que abandonar a faculdade (estava morando fora), para voltar a cuidar dela depois da primeira cirurgia cardíaca. Tenho feito empregos de meio período, mas é muito difícil lidar com tudo isso. Ela tenta manter meu ânimo, mas ainda há muito o que fazer em uma idade tão jovem . A clínica de reabilitação em que ela está agora está longe e não temos fundos para vê-la sempre que quisermos. Trabalhar a tempo parcial e com um salário mais baixo só torna a situação mais difícil, ainda mais que não temos um espaço permanente para viver e podemos ser transferidos a qualquer momento. Ela está grata por estar viva e meu irmão e eu estamos felizes por ter nossa mãe conosco, mas neste momento precisamos da ajuda de todos. Ela não tem família por perto, a irmã mora no Brasil, a mãe idosa mora na Espanha. Meu irmão e eu também não temos família para nos sustentar. Qualquer ajuda seria apreciada. Deus abençoe a todos. ❤❤
