Supporting the Gerus Family After the Palisades Fire
I've known the Gerus family for nearly 7 years as both a friend and former coworker. I've waited to share their story because despite being among the first to lose their home in the devastating Palisades Fire, they have been hesitant to ask for help. But as their friend and someone who's witnessed their journey, I know it's time to reach out to our community.
The timing of this tragedy couldn't have been more challenging. The Gerus family had just returned to Los Angeles a few weeks ago after spending six months overseas, where they had been working to build a new chapter for their family. They came back to an empty home, ready to restart their life in LA. Then this unthinkable happened.
When the evacuation orders came, they were among the first families forced to flee. As you know, especially early on, the fire moved with unprecedented speed, leaving them with mere minutes to escape. In those frantic moments, they were unable to locate and save their beloved family cat – a cherished member of their household who had journeyed with them for years, including recently overseas and back. The loss of their pet has added another layer of heartbreak to an already devastating situation.
Despite their personal tragedy, the Gerus family's first thoughts have turned to our community: "How can we help everyone rebuild?" That's just who they are. They're already forming ideas about community restoration, but right now, they need our help to get back on their feet. They won't ask, so I am.
For those who know them – whether through work, friendship, or community – you understand what makes this family so special. They view the world through uniquely optimistic eyes, always seeing possibilities where others might see obstacles. Their creative spirits and unwavering hope have touched so many lives in our community. But today, they're facing the enormous challenge of rebuilding their own lives from scratch.
I know we're late in starting this fundraiser, and many have already given generously to other families affected by the fire. Every family's story in this tragedy is equally important, and every loss is deeply felt. But if you can help the Gerus family – whether through a donation, sharing their story, or offering support in other ways – it would mean the world to them and to our community.
As a 10-year L.A. resident, watching these stories of devastation unfold has been heart-wrenching. The Palisades Fire has taken so much from so many. But I've also seen the incredible strength of our community coming together to support one another. Today, I'm asking you to extend that support to the Gerus family.
Any contribution, no matter the size, will help them begin to rebuild their lives. Thank you for taking the time to read their story and for any support you can offer.
