Smokey is a gentle street cat I’ve been caring for over the past two years in Maroubra. Right now, he is in constant pain from severe dental disease and is struggling to eat without discomfort. He urgently needs dental surgery to relieve his pain and give him a chance at a healthy, pain-free life.
My name is Koorine, and for the past two years I’ve been caring for a colony of stray cats in the Maroubra area.
What started as noticing a few hungry kittens and abandoned, skinny cats in my neighbourhood has grown into caring for 12 street cats who now rely on me every day for food, safety, and love.
I’m a single mum with two kids and two dogs, and although I can’t foster the cats inside my home because my dogs don’t get along with cats, I wanted to do whatever I could to help them. So I built a large, secure cat house on the side of my home with feeding stations and shelter, giving these cats a safe place to eat and rest.
Over the last two years, I’ve worked hard to get vet treatment for the cats that need urgent care, and with the help of the lovely Kimberly (also known as coolaflady on Instagram), I’ve managed to rehome six cats into loving homes.
I do everything I can for these cats, but sometimes situations come up that I simply can’t manage alone—and that’s why I’m reaching out for help for one very special boy named Smokey.
I’ve been feeding Smokey for just over two years. When I first had him desexed and vaccinated, the vet mentioned he had dental issues, but at the time it wasn’t urgent. Sadly, over the past few months, things have gotten much worse.
Smokey is now clearly in pain when he eats. He drools, struggles with food, and it’s heartbreaking to watch. No cat deserves to live like this.
Thankfully, Ange from Sydney Street Cats Rescue has once again stepped in to help. Ange previously helped me with Winky’s urgent vet care, and because of that support—and everyone who donated to Winky’s GoFundMe—we were able to get him the treatment he needed. That kindness has now helped make it possible for Smokey to get the urgent care he needs too.
With their support, Smokey is now booked in for surgery, and I’m able to access a discounted vet rate and have the procedure done before full payment is made. However, I am still responsible for the vet fees afterwards, which is why I’ve had to reach out for help.
Based on previous dental surgery I’ve had done for Winky, I’m estimating the cost will be around $990. While the surgery itself is estimated at this amount, I’ve set the fundraising goal slightly higher to help cover medications, post-operative care, food during recovery, and any unexpected vet costs.
I do everything I can for these cats, but I simply cannot cover urgent Vet Care like this on my own.
I only ever ask for help when it’s truly needed—for urgent medical care—and right now Smokey really needs it.
I’m also incredibly grateful to Cindy from North Narrabean, who has kindly offered to care for Smokey during his recovery—just like she has been doing for Winky. Cindy still has Winky in her care, and once Smokey has his surgery, he’ll be joining him there.
The beautiful part is that Smokey and Winky are best friends. After everything they’ve been through, they’ll get to recover side by side, together again, in a safe and loving home. Knowing they’ll have each other during recovery means everything.
Smokey is one of the sweetest souls. He’s gentle, quiet, and I’ve never seen him get into a fight. He spends his days following two younger cats he’s bonded with, always staying close and watching over them.
He isn’t meant for life on the streets. He’s shy, kind, and deserves to feel safe, warm, and loved.
Once Smokey has recovered, I will be doing everything I can to find him and Winky forever home’s where they will never have to live in fear or pain again.
If you are able to help Smokey, even the smallest donation truly makes a difference and will go directly toward his urgent vet care. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing his story so it can reach someone who can.
If you would prefer, you can also support Sydney Street Cats Rescue directly, as they continue to help cats like Smokey get the urgent care they need. You can find Sydney Street Cats On Facebook Or Instagram.
I don’t ask for help often—only when it is truly needed—and right now Smokey really needs us.
I will keep everyone updated every step of the way throughout his surgery and recovery. Thank you for taking the time to read Smokey’s story and for giving him a chance at a pain-free life. ❤️
