16 Years with ALS (MND)

After 15 years in Los Angeles, the Gearys have decided to move back to the UK to be closer to family. While we will all miss them terribly, it's the right decision for Sarah and Tim. Getting there is complicated — with ALS, this move involves a lot more than just packing boxes. As Sarah's friends, we're asking you, their beloved and generous community, to join us one last time in helping them get back home.

A Note from Sarah

A few weeks ago, when asked about the move, sweet Sarah wrote this to us:

"It's going to take a huge leap of faith going into the unknown, on top of some very considerable costs. As usual, Tim is already doing all the heavy lifting as well as looking after me. I'm left in my room where so many of you visit, worrying what I can do to help."

The Reality of the Situation

Tim is still handling everything on his own — caring for Sarah, coordinating the move, navigating NHS requirements and searching for caregiving support in England. The to-do list is endless, including setting up all new electronic medical equipment in the UK before they arrive.

How You Can Help

Any amount helps them get closer to making this move happen. Your contribution will go toward:

  • A flight that allows for Sarah's complex needs (an air ambulance or private plane is too expensive)
  • Costs for LA-based caregiver during the move and for UK set-up
  • A replacement wheelchair-accessible vehicle in England
  • A new adjustable airflow hospital bed
  • Mechanical lift and sling
  • Backup ventilator and power generator
  • All medical expenses before they can join the NHS system

Can't contribute financially? There are other ways to pitch in:

  • Offer to help with moving sale
  • Visit Sarah so Tim can run errands
  • Loan of items if you are in the UK

Why We're Asking

Living with ALS is very expensive since Sarah's caregiving is not covered by insurance. Fifteen years ago, when Soho House held a fundraiser, the goal was to support the Gearys for the three years Sarah was given to live. The best news ever is that Sarah is still very much alive. The less good news is that Tim gave up his career to care for Sarah which has come at a high financial cost.

Over the years, people have so often asked, "How can we help Tim and Sarah?" We haven't had a succinct answer until now. Let's pull together now to help them and give them the best send off possible.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for whatever support you can offer. Every dollar helps.

With gratitude,

xxSarah's Girls
