The Situation
Heavy monsoon rain followed by two major floods in the matter of a month has left about 4 million people in Bangladesh’s northeastern region stranded with little or no socio-economic support. A nation of 160 million, Bangladesh is a low-lying delta and faces the constant threat of climate change-related natural disasters such as cyclones, and floods, which disproportionately affect those living in poverty in rural areas. The Bangladesh Flood Forecasting and Warning Center has cited unplanned embankments and extremely heavy rains in Meghalaya and Assam (both are regions in India) as the causes of the two rounds of the flood. The first round of flooding took place on May 10, 2022. As the water began to recede by May 22, the region was hit with a second round of flooding on June 16, exacerbating an already dire situation.
It is estimated that approximately 80% of the Sylhet division is now underwater with water levels varying between different areas, and the water levels are expected to rise even further. Sunamganj is amongst the hardest-hit districts along with the surrounding districts of Sylhet, Habiganj, and Moulvibazar.
