Finney Farm is raising funds to help with costs related to our seed distro program. For over 15 years, our Seed Distro has provided organic, heirloom, open pollinated seed for free as a way to support food access.

 

We typically distribute seeds at in-person events, which continue to be unavailable due to the pandemic. Because of this, we offered some shipping options--$5 for low income households which covers the postage only, or $25+ for folks who could afford a small donation to help offset our costs in addition to the postage.

 

This year, we have set up this Gofundme to collect donations to help with this important project. To start, we have a very small amount of funds to use for shipping and we are hopeful that we’ll be able to bring in Gofundme donations to cover shipping costs as well as other seed distro expenses. Because our current funds are extremely limited we aren’t sure how many packages we can afford to ship but we will send seed as long as we have funding! We will also hand deliver seeds to area schools, Head Start preschools, and food banks.

 

Since all the labor in growing, processing, packaging, and distributing seed is completed entirely by dedicated volunteers, our only costs are out of pocket expenses for materials.

 

Here is an overview of our expense outline:

$1000 Shipping cost to 200 households

$1300 seed envelopes, labels, printing, and shipping materials

$700 growing supplies

$3000 food and lodging costs for short term residential volunteers over the 8 month growing season to help with seed production (all labor is volunteer, we typically host 3-5 short term volunteers during the growing season)

Total Annual cost-$6000

 

If we could get 60 folks to donate $100, we'd be set for the entire year!!! Any amount you can afford to contribute is GREATLY appreciated.  If you donate $30, we can cover shipping costs for 6 people!

 

If by some miracle we receive more than our annual costs, we will put it toward our 2022 building project—the final phase of our barn addition room! This space is currently used for seed curing and processing but because it is unfinished/unheated we do have major issues with moisture and lose seeds to mold during curing each year. When complete, not only will it be perfect for curing/processing but will include a dedicated space for seed storage/inventory and a workshop space as well! The space is about 85% complete, so we are pretty close!
