A Young Family Displaced by Hidden Mold — Fighting to Stay Safe and Rebuild
No family should ever have to choose between their health and having a roof over their heads. But that’s exactly what my son, his wife, and their two young children have faced.
When they bought their home in northern Minnesota, they thought it was their dream — a place to raise their children, care for their pets, and build a life. But what they didn’t know was that behind the walls, toxic mold was spreading — something the sellers never disclosed.
For years, they battled unexplained illness — coughing, headaches, fatigue, burning throats, skin conditions and many more health issues— until they finally discovered the heartbreaking truth: the home that was supposed to keep them safe was making them sick.
As soon as they learned the cause, they did what any loving parents would do — they left the home to protect their children’s health. They’ve since been staying in temporary and short-term accommodations nearby, doing everything they can to keep their kids in school and life as steady as possible. Both parents continue to work full-time while trying to find a safe, affordable place to live until their home can be remediated.
They’ve applied for several local apartments so they can stay close enough to continue working on the house on weekends, but the process has been difficult. They’ve already exhausted their savings on temporary housing, travel to and from work, and early repair efforts that went nowhere.
Their closest family is an hour and a half away, which makes daily help difficult — yet they remain determined to stay close to their jobs, their community, and their children’s school.
They also have a few beloved pets, including one cat bravely fighting cancer, who are part of their family and need to stay together through this difficult time.
Winter has already begun settling in, and the temperatures are dropping fast. The urgency to secure stable housing before the deep cold arrives is overwhelming. Still, they remain hopeful — doing everything they can to rebuild their home, their health, and their sense of stability.
Your kindness can help give them the chance to breathe again — to find a warm, safe place to stay this winter while they fight to save their home. Every donation, every share, and every prayer truly matters. ❤️
They didn’t deserve this — but with your help, they can stay safe, heal, and one day go home again.
Update: A Place to Stay, but Still Struggling to Rebuild
My son and his family have finally found a small two-bedroom apartment after leaving their home because of hidden mold. Having a place to stay is an important step forward, but they have no furniture and are still struggling to afford food and pay their bills.
They are now carrying two housing payments: rent for their apartment and the monthly mortgage on a house they cannot live in. They must continue paying that mortgage until they can get the house cleaned out and sold.
Both parents continue to work full-time, sharing one vehicle between them while caring for their two young children. Despite their hard work, their savings are gone, debt has piled up, and there is no extra money to get back on their feet.
As a mother and grandmother, it is heartbreaking to watch them work so hard and still struggle to meet their family’s basic needs. They are doing everything they can to give their children stability, but they need help getting through this.
Donations will help with:
* Groceries and everyday necessities.
* Beds and other basic furniture for their apartment.
* Rent, mortgage payments, and utilities.
* Gas and transportation to keep both parents working.
Their goal now is to get their house cleaned out and sold so they can move forward without the burden of paying for two homes. In the meantime, every bit of support can help ease the pressure and give them some breathing room.
If you are nearby and have furniture or household essentials you would like to donate, please reach out to me.
Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared their story, or kept them in your prayers. If you cannot give, sharing this fundraiser is another meaningful way to help.
They have a roof over their heads again. With your kindness, we can help them turn this small apartment into a home and begin rebuilding their lives. ❤️
