Please consider supporting the Emerson family- an amazing family (and one of the kindest and most caring couples there is....truly). Their story is so unique and never something they could have ever prepared for. Yet they continue to push forward, both working day and night for their family and their kids' needs.
Their Story:
Three years ago (in 2016) their daughter Lina (who was less than a year old) became ill. After many months and a long series of tests, doctors discovered she has an extremely rare genetic disorder called Leigh's syndrome. This was extremely difficult news for Jen and Evan to process, as they were told that children with this disease do not often live past 3 years old. (Although Lina has now surpassed that and will be 4 in June!)
They also found out they were pregnant again shortly before getting the official diagnosis for Lina. There was a 25% chance that their next child would have the same disorder, so immediately after he was born he too was tested. Jen and Evan then received the devastating news that their son Malachi had also been diagnosed with the same condition as his sister Lina.
The weeks and months to follow these times were some of the worst and most trying times that a family could imagine. In December of 2018, Lina had a very scary episode where she was in the ICU and did not have a pulse for a short time. Doctors told Jen and Evan they were unsure if Lina would be returning home at all. Miraculously, through much prayer, she was able to return home. That hospitalization, though, left her needing to use a trach (a special breathing tube attached to her airway) and have ongoing nursing care in their home.
Their lives involve non-stop daily medications for both kids, and many treatments and special care for Lina. Their family is also now typically confined to their home as any simple cold or flu could lead to hospitalization or other devastating effects for either of the kids. Yet despite all of this Jen and Evan continue to press on, encouraging other people and still showing so much kindness to others, despite their own circumstances.
How Your Support Will Help:
$10,000 will fully pay off the wheelchair accessible van they needed to buy so they could go places as a family. (Necessary doctor appointments and family outings when the weather is better to make as many memories as possible.)
$5,000 will fully pay off all credit cards so they don't have that debt from the last few years of just normal living and bills that have come from this process.
$3,000 will cover a year of their monthly medical expenses that are not covered by Medicaid- the expenses are normally $200-$300 a month.
