Updated: 10/15/26 More terrible news. The 2nd trial has failed and Cristy has been removed from it. Everything has grown and we don't know where we go from here. We have a meeting with oncology on Friday the 16th but we're not sure of any options at the moment. It's scary and terrible. I keep interviewing for jobs and then don't get them which is not helping life in general. But being broke is the least of our worries right now. We're hoping for some sort of treatment news that will offer some odds of success but we know that she's burned through 3 lines of therapy already. Cristy deserves some good news for a change and we hope we get some tomorrow. Thank you all for your support these last years.

Updated Sept 5 2026

We found out terrible news this week. The day before Cristy was set to start the new trial through Virginia Cancer Specialists, we found that the cancer has spread to her lungs and there are lesions on her back and a lump under her left arm pit. That's three new places we were unaware of and it was hard news to take. The positive is that the trial has begun because if it works it will work on all sarcoma related issues. We hope.
Like so many families in this country we are drowning in unnecessary medical bills. While idiots pat themselves on the back and say how great this country is people go bankrupt for medical issues or lose everything just trying to stay alive.

I wish I had better news. All the best,

James, Cristy and Kat
We have created a new GoFundMe based on advice from GoFundMe so I have paused donations here. Thank you to everyone who has helped the last 2 years. I thought we were out of the woods but we keep getting knocked back.

We're almost a month into the NIH trial. It's a lot more time and travel but hopefully it's working!

Please share this new link if you can. I know this stuff is exhausting. https://gofund.me/f403c3ab6

Hi Folks. We're almost two years into this and are facing some more difficulties. Cristy is entering a Trial at NIH because this last chemo she has been on isn't working as well as hoped. Her previous different types had stopped working altogether. She secured the last spot available in this current Trial and we are hoping it will be effective. It is a logistical nightmare which is understandable since it's a trial but it is going to cause more hardship on us. As long as it works I will crawl through fire to get her there. Please pass this around. Thank you

The Dunn Family could use your help. James, Sonia (Cristy), and Katerina have some difficult news to share with everyone.

On June 5th, 2024, my wonderful wife Sonia (Cristy) Juarez found out that she has a leiomyosarcoma tumor the size of an adult brain in her upper right abdominal cavity that is compressing her Inferior Vena Cava (IVC). This is a rare cancer that strikes only around 1,200 people a year. It can appear anywhere in soft muscle tissue, and it is very dangerous.

Fortunately, we were able to access specialists at the Schar Cancer Institute of INOVA Fairfax in Virginia and at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. It’s a lot of driving and time to get there, but the care is excellent.

Cristy had the tumor removed along with her right kidney in August of 2025 after over a year of chemotherapy. At the time the lesions on her liver had shrunk or disappeared.

Unfortunately a scan in October 2025 revealed a new lesion in her abdominal wall that was not there before. She restarted chemo and continued into January 2026. A new scan revealed more spreading on the liver and more lesions in her abdomen.

Jan 29 2026 started a new chemo regimen combo called Gem/Tax or something close to that. This will cause her to lose her hair again but we hope it will work. Cristy is also registered for a trial study at NIH if it comes to that which we hope it does not.

Update April 17 2026

Hello everyone. We got the latest scan results and it wasn't the news we had hoped for. On one hand it's slow growth, the fact is that the disease is still progressing. On a positive note it doesn't show new lesions but the ones that are there have still grown.

So there are still two lesions on the abdominal wall and the ones on the liver have grown again even if it's a small amount.

Our medical team has decided we should suspend the current chemo regimen and enter a trial treatment at NIH. Over the next week we're going for multiple appointments to check Cristy's heart to make sure she is healthy enough for the first trial. She has been on medications to help repair some damage to her heart from all the chemo she has taken since July of 2024.

It's a bit of a blow since we had hoped for more direct results from the last 3 months of treatment she has been on a new chemo type. The Gem/Tax regimen.

There are secondary trials Cristy can enter if her heart is not strong enough for the main one they want her to do.

As always, thank you all for your support.
