This week, our friend, Rich Crist, his wife Karen, and their son Sam escaped from the Camp Fire that devastated their town of Paradise, Calif. Rich had one car with three cats and a dog, Karen and Sam followed behind him in another car with three more cats. Rich said that they were driving out of town with flames on both sides of them, feeling the heat from the fire the whole time, dodging toppled, burning phone poles, barely missing a downed transformer, and driving over felled power lines. It was so dark that they couldn't see where they were going, to the point that they ended up on the wrong side of the freeway. While they left no one left behind in their home—all of their possessions, except for one suitcase of clothes, were lost. They literally have nothing. They are currently staying in hotels, with the long-term situation being unknown at this point.
