Help the Clantons as Melissa Fights Leukemia Again
Donation protected
In December of 2018, I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, an aggressive and deadly blood cancer. I had to take a medical leave of absence from my job as a remedial reading teacher for elementary school students. I spent a month in the hospital undergoing multiple bone marrow biopsies, blood and platelet transfusions, and chemotherapy. I left the hospital in January and achieved remission later that month. Over the next four months, I received twenty-four more maintenance doses of chemotherapy and numerous blood and platelet transfusions. I exhausted all my leave time and was out on leave without pay.
Miraculously, I was able to return to work in April but only part time. I was able to finish out the school year while receiving less than half of my pay due to having to be out on leave without pay. My teaching contract was renewed for this year, and I was looking forward to an exciting year with a new group of students.
Unfortunately, that did not happen. On August 10th during a routine checkup with my oncologist, it was discovered my leukemia had returned. This time it is necessary to receive aggressive chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant in order to save my life. This means several months of hospitalization and round-the-clock at home care. I am currently undergoing chemotherapy at Emory University Hospital.
This GoFundMe page is to help cover household bills and expenses as I will not be getting paid at all this time around. Like most families, we are a two income household and need a way now to cover my loss of pay for the next several months. Our savings were exhausted during the last leukemia battle.
I am asking for $10,000.00. This is four months of my salary. I am not sure at this time when I will be able to return to work - it could be many months. It will be very difficult for my husband to make ends meet with one income. Any donation will help us in meeting expenses as we go through this very difficult time.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Melissa Clanton
