In September 2018, a pancreatic tumor was discovered on Joe's bile duct. It was truly a miracle that it was discovered considering he was suffering no obvious symptoms. Unfortunately, due to the position of the tumor, a very complicated surgery was necessary.
Joe has spent the last 8 months, 5 holidays, 2 birthdays And1 anniversary in the hospital setting. In his first 29 days at the hospital, he had 16+ different surgeries/procedures in which he was sedated in his first four months in ICU. During this time Joe had multiple blood infections (sepsis) many times which resulted in blood transfusions to replace 13 pints of blood. This also resulted in dialysis due to kidney failure.
Joe was not expected to survive but has beat all odds and 8 months later he is now going through rehabilitation and getting stronger every day to finally go home. His wife Cyndi and daughter Victoria have not left his side and have been with him morning, noon and night.
Once Joe is released to go home, he will need around the clock care and his recovery will require things like installation of handrails throughout the home, possible reconfiguration of steps, entryways and bathrooms and multiple other medical attention (Nurses, physical therapy, occupational therapy, etc.).
Joe still has a long road to go and all money raised here will go towards his recovery and medical needs. Please continue to keep the Chavis family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
