Hi: As a former Ketchikan resident and active animal rescuer/advocate, I would like to encourage Ketchikan to please support/donate/get involved with the Ketchikan Community Cats Program https://www.facebook.com/groups/155959595025665
(Jeff and I met there in November 1982 and married there). I grew up in Ketchikan and have family remaining there as well. I dedicate my time and love to this special "rescue" in Loving Memory of Crazy Cat.
This organization is basically comprised of a handful of gals and one or more guys doing it all (humanely trapping and then getting cats spayed and neutered at 1/2 local vet clinics, searching for and locating fosters for strays and ferals that are fixed, purchasing cat food for people that are "feeders" to community cats and much more). They provide their time and their supplies (traps, cages to put cats in after trapping, carriers, cat food, litter boxes, litter, vet care, etc) at their expense pretty much.
In the month of December 2023 alone, here are some of their posts on their page:

They are sponsoring/have arranged for an educational session to take place @ the
Ketchikan Library on 10/14 to help train people to safely and humanely trap feral/stray cats. It will be from 10:30-11:30am (expertise provided by Ketchikan Animal Protection staff).
KCCP is also providing an educational session to the community regarding how to foster and care for fragile kittens; having this knowledge and experience can make all the difference in the world; it did for Rosie who was at high risk to not surviving, but because of her awesome foster parents, she is alive and thriving. This session to be held on 11/4/23 @the Ketchikan Library.

They would love to have a Fund to Help cover the expense of altering cats that they help. This would be the main intent for this fundraiser. Donations can be made directly to Stonetree Vet Clinic and Island to Island Veterinary Clinic if you are not comfortable doing online donations.
Katy works @Silly Munchkins and can have donations dropped off there for KCCP until further notice.
I grew up in Ketchikan and remember living in an apartment and feeding cats (strays/ferals). Back then I didn't know about feral cats and the need to spay and neuter cats to help prevent cat over population = cats suffering as ferals scrounging for food and shelter and going without medical care for illnesses and injuries/cats living in fear...cats that end up in shelters thru no fault of their own and if they're lucky, they're adopted; if not, many are euthanized.
- The Ketchikan Community Cats Program (KCCP) began providing foster homes and care for unowned kittens and adults in May 2017. In addition to providing direct care, KCCP provides food to dedicated feeders in the community and on Prince of Wales Island and material support (carriers, beds, litter, litter boxes) to community members in need. KCCP has always endeavored to collaborate with other rescue organizations to better provide for the community cats, including working with Meow Cat Rescue in Kirkland, Washington to transfer two cats requiring specialized eye surgery. Recently KCCP worked with the Good Fix team when they were providing free altering services on Prince of Wales Island and Metlakatla KCCP receives donated materials from the community that are then redistributed within the community or retained for use by fosters (black wire crates, litter boxes, litter, food, beds) and financial donations are directed to Stonetree Vet Clinic to help cover medical expenses. KCCP also has traps available for community members to borrow when needing to capture a cat. Both this summer and last, the local municipal Animal Protection shelter has been so overwhelmed with surrendered cats and kittens that they have had to stop accepting more animals, resulting in more cats and kittens being abandoned. KCCP recognizes the growing need to work with Animal Protection to provide temporary housing for cats and kittens that either need socialization to be adoptable or until space at the municipal shelter has space available.

I have learned that the approximate cost to spay or neuter a cat, get them vaccinated, flea treatment and dewormed is $250/cat. Please help this local organization help the cats. Here is a rough idea of expenses associated with helping/rescuing a cat: Feline OHE: $159, Feline Neuter: $50, Microchipping: $49, Rabies Vaccine: $16, Wellness Exam: $50 and Medical Issue Exam: $60.
Thank you/doykeshin for your support to help the cats in Ketchikan.
