Help the Carrasquilla-Ballestas Family bring their dad home

My name is Zoe Zeligs, and I’m organizing this fundraiser on behalf of Camila Carrasquilla Ballestas and her family.

Cami has been our nanny, and so much more, for the past two years. She shows up every day with care and joy, and treats our family like her own. What many people don’t see is the weight she carries on her shoulders as she quietly supports her family back in Colombia, sending money home from every paycheck to help them survive an incredibly difficult chapter.

For the past 10+ years, Cami’s father has lived with a debilitating autoimmune disease that left him a quadriplegic. Despite his condition, he continued working remotely during the pandemic until his company suddenly terminated his contract, citing a need for in-person work that he physically could not do. That single decision threw their family into a financial crisis.

Cami’s mother had to quit her job to become his full-time caregiver. And recently, his condition took a sharp turn as he’s been in a chronic care facility for the past nine months, connected to a mechanical ventilator after his diaphragm collapsed. His health is incredibly fragile, and his care is complex and expensive.

Cami’s mom is at his side day and night, but the situation is not sustainable. Their family is emotionally and financially drained, and they don’t have the resources to bring him home safely. Her two younger sisters had to pause their education, and there were times they didn’t have enough to eat. Because her father’s social security was based on minimum wage, the small pension he now receives barely covers anything, especially given how expensive his care has become. That’s where we can help.

Their goal is to bring their dad home within the next month. This situation isn’t just exhausting, it’s unsustainable. The clinic is far from their home and incredibly expensive. Cami’s mom is there around the clock and can barely return home to care for Cami’s younger sisters. The family is spread thin emotionally, financially, and physically.

They’ve tried to get support from foundations, but were told their situation didn’t qualify. Cami has never asked for help, but she and her family are beyond deserving. So we’re asking now, on their behalf, in hopes of getting the family the support they need.

Cami ha sido nuestra niñera—y mucho más—durante los últimos dos años. Cada día llega con cuidado, alegría y entrega, y trata a nuestra familia como si fuera la suya. Lo que muchas personas no ven es el peso que carga en silencio al apoyar a su familia en Colombia, enviando dinero de cada sueldo para ayudarlos a sobrellevar una situación increíblemente difícil.

Desde hace más de 10 años, el padre de Cami vive con una enfermedad autoinmune debilitante que lo dejó cuadripléjico. A pesar de su condición, siguió trabajando de manera remota durante la pandemia, hasta que su empresa decidió despedirlo repentinamente, alegando que necesitaban su presencia física, algo que él no podía cumplir. Esa decisión sumió a la familia en una crisis económica.

La mamá de Cami tuvo que dejar su trabajo para convertirse en su cuidadora de tiempo completo. Y recientemente, la salud de su papá se deterioró drásticamente: lleva nueve meses internado en una clínica de cuidado crónico, conectado a un ventilador mecánico tras el colapso de su diafragma. Su estado es sumamente delicado y su atención médica es compleja y costosa.

La mamá de Cami está a su lado día y noche, pero la situación no es sostenible. La familia está emocional y financieramente agotada, y no cuenta con los recursos para llevarlo a casa de forma segura. Sus dos hermanas menores tuvieron que pausar sus estudios, y hubo momentos en los que ni siquiera tenían suficiente para comer. Como la pensión del padre de Cami se basa en el salario mínimo, lo que recibe apenas alcanza para cubrir una mínima parte de sus necesidades, especialmente considerando lo costoso que es su tratamiento. Ahí es donde podemos ayudar.

¿Para qué estamos recaudando fondos?

Nuestro objetivo es reunir $25,000 USD para ayudar a la familia de Cami a traer a su papá a casa lo antes posible, con seguridad, dignidad y comodidad. Los fondos se destinarán de inmediato a:

El objetivo es poder traer a su papá a casa dentro del próximo mes. Esta situación no solo es agotadora—es insostenible. La clínica está lejos de su hogar y es extremadamente costosa. La mamá de Cami está allí todo el tiempo y apenas puede volver a casa para cuidar a sus hijas menores. La familia está emocional, financiera y físicamente sobrepasada.

Han intentado obtener apoyo de fundaciones, pero les han dicho que su situación no califica. Por eso recurrimos a ustedes ahora, con la esperanza de conseguir el apoyo que esta familia merece. Esta familia ha pasado por más de lo que muchos podrían imaginar. Cami nunca ha pedido ayuda, pero ella y su familia la merecen.
