On January 8, 2025, my best friend’s family lost their home due to the fires in Altadena. This home changed their life in a special way. They lived here for 14 years, cherishing multiple memories with their three children, four grandchildren, and two dogs. Altadena is their community. This home gave their family so much happiness by providing a place where their children and grandchildren could gather together. They immigrated to America from the Philippines in hopes for a better life for their family, and never imagined that this scenario would ever happen to them. The Calica Family has lost everything to the Eaton Fire.
This home radiated love from start to finish. It provided a sense of safety and stability. There’s this airy, positive, light, and happy emotion you feel when you first walk in. It’s truly the definition of “there’s no place like home.” With little time to evacuate, they lost everything besides important documents.
On their last memory here, there was no power, so they played Uno to pass the time—not knowing that was going to be their last happy memory in their house. Thankfully, everyone is safe and alive. However, losing this home was very tragic and heartbreaking.
As the Calica Family navigates this devastating loss, we are reaching out to friends, family, and the larger community for your support in helping them rebuild their lives. Your donation will go directly toward replacing essential items and helping them get back on their feet.
Any amount, big or small, is deeply appreciated. We are grateful for your kindness and generosity during this difficult time. Thank you so much for your support.
Note: My name is Micah Joy San Agustin, also from northeast Los Angeles/Eagle Rock, and I am a longtime friend of Jennel Calica and her family. The picture above was taken by Jennel in the aftermath of the fire.
