The Buttery Music School needs your help!
If you haven't heard of us, we are a community-focused, woman-owned music school with a twist. The Buttery is all about helping people grow and connect through music. Floods and forced relocation have hit us with a much bigger bill than expected in the journey to turn our dream of an exciting new space into a reality. We really need a hand.
Our Story:
Eight years ago I realised I wanted to grow something that builds community, supports mental health and celebrates uniqueness. This has led myself and some friends to building the Buttery - a home to 11 music mentors, 100 students of all ages, and 7 music studio-filled shipping containers.
We've been through a bit of a rough patch lately. Forced to relocate across Brisbane from Yeronga to Hamilton and teach out of a temporary space all of this year while we wait for access to our new permanent space, our student numbers went from 130 down to 20. But with some good old-fashioned elbow grease we've bounced back, and we're now rocking it with 100 amazing students. But the rocky road isn't over just yet.
Why We Need Your Help:
To keep the music rolling and our Buttery community thriving, we need to abide by some serious OH&S standards in setting up our new space, which means approximately $25,000 in costs.
Breakdown of Costs:
- $11,743 - Equipment and labour to build certified shipping container footings
- $5,040 - Container dome roof and labour to build it (providing a larger space for events and workshops)
- $3,200 - approximate cost of wheelchair ramp and steps
- $3,200 - approximate cost of maintenance on the current studios (new doors, new locks, maintenance)
- $2,500 - approximate cost of extra music equipment and lighting required
- Total - $25,683
Our Vision:
At the heart of the Buttery Music School, everything we do is focused on three things:
- Creating community
- Reclaiming music as something accessible to everyone, with an emphasis on expressing over impressing
- Creating a fully supported journey for those who want to pursue music seriously - from their first time playing an instrument, songwriting, joining bands, gigs, and recording. You can check out The Buttery EP of songs written and recorded by Buttery students right here .
Our new space is going to be entirely built around these three values. It will be the ultimate jamming den, where we'll host music lessons, workshops, gigs, social events, and band camps. We have special events specifically for marginalised folk such as the LGBTQIA+ community (of which myself and a number of Buttery mentors are a part of) and neurodivergent folk.
