On Thursday, October 11, 2018, Salem, VA received large amounts of rain very quickly causing flash flooding of streets and rivers from Hurricane Michael. We live in a first floor apartment in at the Riverwalk apartments with our 2 and 4 year old girls and sewage began to back up into our apartment quickly. We evacuated on our own, but our entire complex was evacuated later Thursday night due to the Roanoke River overflowing its banks. The fire department cut off the electricity to the entire apartment complex for safety reasons.
We grabbed a couple of bags with a few things in them for us and our girls and now that is all that we own. Everything in our apartment is completely destroyed. Even the items that weren’t under the 2-3 feet of water (depending on the room), they have water damage because of the moisture in the air. Even the items that were high up in the closets are soaked. Our couch, recliner, TV stand, toy boxes, all of our beds, all of our clothes and shoes, etc are all wet and destroyed.
We are currently staying in a hotel and we will be going to an extended stay hotel for an extended period of time. We are having to pay for everything out of pocket right now (food, toiletries, diapers, hotel, medicines) in the hopes that insurance may reimburse us some of it.
We hate to ask for help, but we are having to start over from scratch. Thank you all so much!
