Rebuilding After Our Home Fire — Anything Helps
On November 24, our family experienced the unimaginable. A fire broke out in our home early in the afternoon, and thanks to the incredible quick thinking of our local garbage collector — who saw the flames and banged on our doors until we got out — every one of us made it to safety. We are forever grateful to them and to the multitude firefighters who contained the blaze and saved the structure of our home.
Even with their heroic efforts, almost everything inside has been destroyed by fire, smoke and water. We lost belongings, memories, and the everyday things that make a home feel like home. Our pets were rescued safely, but heartbreakingly, two of our daughter’s small animals did not survive. We’re holding each other close as we process all of this.
My husband is a retired Master Sergeant of the United States Air Force who now works as a barber at the VA, giving back to the veterans community that means everything to him. I am a nurse. Together we are raising five children — one serving on active duty, and one who is severely disabled and requires total care.
The fire heavily damaged our garage, which was my husband’s creative space, his therapy, and his release. Our children have lost their rooms and their sense of normalcy. Right now, we are focused on finding a new place to live, replacing essentials, and trying to restore stability for our family. We don’t yet know what the totality is, but we do know we need help getting back on our feet.
