Our dear friends have found themselves in great hardship as the result of unforeseen and extraordinary medical expenses, yet their triumph over the adversities has been inspirational.
In July 2020 Bob, a lifelong Type1 Diabetic and kidney/pancreas transplant recipient had a squamous cell carcinoma removed from his right calf. Unfortunately, because of his Diabetes and poor circulation, the wound did not heal and as a result, grew from dime-size to encircle the whole calf. Bob went on disability in October 2020 due to extreme chronic pain and constant treatments. Shortly thereafter he was hospitalized for 76 days in an attempt to save his right leg. Hyperbaric chamber sessions, hydrating wound vacs, and countless rebreeding surgeries left Bob with no other option than to have his right leg amputated below the knee on November 30th, 2020.
During the amputation of the right leg, the surgeon decided to debride a small area on Bob’s left leg he thought looked questionable. Unfortunately, the left leg followed the trajectory of the right leg and was quickly amputated in April 2021. Both legs suffered from healing issues preventing Bob from getting prosthetics until November 2021. Since then, Bob has suffered many health setbacks which have kept him from progressing further with rehab and using his prosthetics regularly. Bob is an extremely positive person and continues to work through his daily struggles.
Bob, Penny, and Clayton Appleman are residents of Dripping Springs, Texas. Bob has worked in IT/Customer Service management for many years, Penny works for the City of Dripping Springs as an Accounting Assistant, and Clayton will be a Sophomore at Texas State University in the Fall. He looks forward to nothing more than the day he can wear his prosthetics and return to work.
During these almost two years of hospitalizations and recovery, Penny has been the sole breadwinner for the family. Their income was cut by almost two-thirds and health life insurance had to be canceled. At this point, their savings are depleted, credit card debt is unmanageable, and college tuition for Clayton is adding up. They have sold Bob’s truck and are considering selling their house if they cannot find relief.
Please consider donating to the Appleman’s. Your kindness will go a long way to helping this inspirational, loving, and dedicated family to hopefully keep their home and see a way through the tunnel towards recovery.
