This past summer, eighteen of us (Notre Dame students) were lucky enough to be able to experience the vibrant culture and complex history of South Africa. During our time, we were lucky enough to meet Thaafier and Craig.
Thaafier, our tour guide, is a father to three and a husband. Thaafier is extremely knowledgeable about the history of South Africa, and while he is always available to teach about apartheid or anything else, he's also always ready to crack a joke for a lighthearted and comfortable environment.
Craig, our chef, is a triplet and a passionate human. Craig is not only an unbelievable cook, but he also constantly looked to be involved with the group and have meaningful conversations with each student that left us all nothing short of inspired and with a new friend for life.
Both Thaafier and Craig's living situation reflects the enduring consequences of apartheid. Both live in townships filled with theft, vandalism, and countless murders that go unaccounted for every day. Even with this harsh reality they both face, they still defy all odds and work hard to provide for their families. Even with all the adversity they face, they both unbelievably are the kindest people you could ever become friends with.
Our goal is to raise enough money to help Craig achieve his dream of owning a food truck in a stable part of South Africa, and to raise enough to give to Thaafier to help him support his family.
