My son, Terry W. Chrisco, is a double leg amputee who lost both legs below the knee due to complications from diabetes. Terry is a big man, weighing 380 lbs, and right now he and his wife—who is bravely undergoing cancer treatment—live with us in our 109-year-old two-story house. Terry sleeps upstairs, and every day he has to crawl up the stairs on his stumps to reach his room and the bathroom. This heartbreaking routine has caused open wounds and damage to his stumps, making healing nearly impossible. He keeps his stumps bandaged to protect them, but the constant climbing means the sores never get a chance to heal. Downstairs, Terry uses a wheelchair, but the stairs remain a major barrier to his safety and comfort.

Currently, Terry is in the hospital, and our family is doing everything we can to support him. I reached out to regional chair lift companies and found a Raleigh-based company that offers a chair lift strong enough to support Terry’s weight. However, the cost for a lift that fits his needs is more than we can afford. Terry is on disability. My husband and I are in our 70s, and we simply do not have the money to cover this expense.
