I am from Kenya where I began my Bachelors degree. I then received a fellowship to study and earned my Masters in 2016 in China. I returned to my country for one year and then I was accepted on an international fellowship again in China, this time for a PhD in Journalism and Communications in 2017. At the end of that year, just as I was about to undertake my dissertation work, I was outed as a lesbian to my program director and removed from the program. If I had been reported and returned to Kenya I would have gone to prison- it is illegal to be gay there. In my life before this occurred I was closeted and when my family found out they disowned me.
I found an asylum program and came to the US. Through this program I began to network with lesbian professors who have helped me to audit classes and apply to graduate school here in the US. I was accepted to the International Development and Social Change program at Clark University. I am so happy to get back to school and recently completed my first year with a 50% tuition scholarship from the school, with the remaining tuition covered by generous well-wishers. Now I am entering my second year with another scholarship from Clark and the remaining tuition covered from my part-time job and whatever I am able to fundraise from supporters to allow me to complete this program.
Please help me complete my final year! I want to get educated to facilitate awareness of how we can support greater equality in the world. Anything you can donate will be greatly appreciated!
Dear friends and supporters of Teri,
We are writing with an important update - Teri has successfully been able to take part in her first semester of classes, with much gratitude, and thanks to your generous support! Now Teri's program fees for her last and final upcoming semester have increased because of new school policies which are forcing her to pay a substantially larger fee to purchase into a different kind of insurance than the lower cost coverage plan she had last year. Because of that circumstance we've bumped our fundraising goal for Teri up by $2,500 dollars to help ensure she will still be able to complete her final semester.
We are so close! Will you take a quick moment and join us in making a donation today to help Teri finish school this year?
This is a community effort, and I know we can help Teri get there if we do it together. If one hundred of us spread the word and each makes a small donation of about $25 or more (the price of one really good book or dvd) Teri will be at her goal and will be able to finish her program!
Will you pop over to the gofundme page right now and join us in helping Teri? Thank you!
Tory & Denise (in support of our amazing friend Teri)
