Tenley, a creative, athletic, and vibrant 22-year-old, had just graduated from college and started working at her first job in her new career, as a Rehab Therapist Assistant helping the elderly in a Long Term Care facility last summer. With the stability of her new job and her hard-earned savings, she was able to buy her very first fixer-upper house in a town 2 hours away from where she grew up. Life looked amazingly bright for her, even amidst the Covid-19 haze of 2020.
Then in late December 2020, she was given an injection of the Moderna vaccine in one of the first waves for health care workers in BC due to the nature of her work. Now Tenley is truly one-in-a-million, but in a way that no one wants to be. She experienced some nausea and other symptoms immediately following the shot. They resolved fairly quickly, except for a headache and fatigue that persisted. On January 18, 2021, about 2 and a half weeks after the vaccine, her legs felt unstable and wobbly while at work and she was encouraged to leave her work shift early. The next morning she woke unable to stand or walk on her own without additional support, and ultimately collapsed at home. She was immediately taken to the ER. Tenley spent 2 weeks in hospital, and has since been seen by hospitalists, neurologists, a psychiatrist, has had 2 MRIs, and a lumbar puncture. Since her release from the hospital, she has had very limited medical support or direction as to treatment or physical therapy care as there is no current diagnosis or prognosis. Most of the care she is receiving she has had to request and beg for, not to mention pay for with cash out of her own pocket. No health care workers or doctors have ruled out the vaccine as the cause, and unfortunately, none have definitively documented that it is directly related. She is in medical limbo-land and her WorkSafe claim has not been approved either. Seriously, just think about it all for just a moment. The chances are extremely unlikely for a healthy and active 22-year-old to wake up one day and not be able to walk (unless just given an experimental vaccine that has been reported to cause similar or worse adverse events, perhaps?) Ok, I'm not here to determine how it happened, I just know that I wanted desperately to help Tenley and the family. After talking with her mother recently, who is a dear friend, she expressed her heartbreak. And although I know she didn't really want to tell me, the stress of the financial reality on Tenley and the family from such an adverse event like this is significant. Even in Canada with subsidized "free" medical, there are still costs that accumulate especially when there is no diagnosis. Tenley isn't being compensated for the loss of work or even more important for the bodily harm she is now challenged with. It has been almost 6 months and her physical status has not improved. She cannot drive, she cannot work, and she cannot walk unaided.
Just think how you would feel if Tenley were your sister, or daughter, or niece, or granddaughter, or girlfriend, or best friend, or co-worker, or boss, or banker, or nurse, or roofer, or landscaper, or teacher, or... well, you name it. Yes, your heart would break. Mine did! And I wanted to help ease some of their burdens somehow, and now you can too. Tenley is so very determined to walk again on her own and get her life back. She really wants it, and I want that for her too.
Please donate whatever you can to help Tenley cover expenses like paying her monthly living expenses, getting physical therapy and specialists so that she can get the right care for her, and pay for equipment like a better walker, a ramp at home, any special bathroom & kitchen equipment, and the retrofitting of her vehicle, etc.
