In a world that seems increasingly adrift, some voices continue to point us north. One of those voices belongs to Vovó Cecília — retired librarian, storyteller, cataloging instructor, and a woman of remarkable courage who, from the heart of Mafalala, has been lighting up corners with books, oral traditions, and joy.
The passion for books and oral storytelling was passed down to her by her father — a Ndau man who taught her the power of words. Vovó Cecília became the first Mozambican librarian formally trained in the country (a teacher since colonial times). Today, with that same passion, she pushes a small cart through the streets of the iconic Mafalala neighborhood, bringing books to children, reigniting the love for reading, and reconnecting generations through listening and imagination.
Her life is more than memory: it is intangible heritage, resistance, shared wisdom — and it is urgent that we immortalize it.
The Projecto Utopia is producing a documentary that celebrates her journey and marks the beginning of a larger movement: the Center for Research and Cataloguing of Ancestral Knowledge and Memories. This documentary is the first step in a collective dream that also includes the creation of the Vovó Cecília Community Library, which will carry her name, her story, and her legacy for future generations.
In a world dominated by the speed of information — where technology often isolates rather than connects — Vovó Cecília reminds us that true wisdom lives in gathering, in listening, in the simple act of sharing stories beneath a tree or at the feet of a curious child. Honoring elders is honoring the path that brought us here.
But to complete this essential work, we need you.

Num tempo em que o mundo parece perder o rumo, há vozes que continuam a apontar o norte. Uma dessas vozes é a da Vovó Cecília — bibliotecária aposentada, contadora de histórias, instrutora de catalogação bibliotecária, mulher de coragem que, a partir do coração da Mafalala, tem iluminado esquinas com livros, oralidade e alegria.
Herdeira da paixão pelos livros e pela narrativa oral passada pelo pai — um homem Ndau que lhe transmitiu a força das palavras — Vovó Cecília foi a primeira bibliotecária moçambicana instruída no país (professora desde a era colonial). Hoje, com a mesma paixão, empurra uma carinha de mãos pelas ruas do icônico bairro da Mafalala, levando livros a crianças, reavivando o gosto pela leitura e reaproximando gerações através da escuta e da imaginação.
A sua vida é mais do que memória: é património imaterial, é resistência, é sabedoria partilhada — e é urgente imortalizá-la.
O Projecto Utopia está a produzir um vídeo-documentário que celebra a sua trajectória e inaugura um movimento maior: o Centro de Pesquisa e Catalogação de Memórias e Saberes Ancestrais. Este documentário é o primeiro passo de um sonho colectivo que inclui também a construção da Biblioteca Comunitária Vovó Cecília, que carregará o seu nome, a sua história e o seu legado para as gerações futuras.
Num mundo dominado pela velocidade da informação, onde as tecnologias muitas vezes afastam em vez de aproximar, a Vovó Cecília recorda-nos que a verdadeira sabedoria está no encontro, na escuta, no gesto simples de partilhar histórias à sombra de uma árvore, ou ao pé de uma criança curiosa. Honrar os anciãos é honrar o caminho que nos trouxe até aqui.

É honrar uma pioneira invisibilizada, num país onde a cultura resiste mas ainda luta para respirar diante das grandes agendas e de um género que carece de empoderamento real.
É afirmar que os anciãos são pilares da nossa memória colectiva e que suas vidas não devem desaparecer no silêncio.
