Five days ago Teddy became really unwell. He was taken into emergency care actively in GI stasis, and was diagnosed with a large kidney stone. From what I understand, these can be pretty difficult to treat in tiny bunnies like Teddy.

GI stasis is when their digestive system begins to shut down. This can become fatal quickly without immediate medical care. Teddy needed urgent hospitalisation, pain relief, and assisted feeding to keep his gut moving and prevent life-threatening complications, which is why his emergency care has been so intensive over the past few days. This has all taken place before we have even been able to determine the best course of treatment for his kidney stone.

He was hospitalised on Wednesday and since then (it is now Saturday), I’ve already spent thousands of dollars on emergency diagnostics, hospital stays, medications, and supportive care. However, we are still in the early stages of figuring out what his long-term treatment plan will need to be.

Teddy is young and otherwise healthy. I want him to have the chance to live a long, happy life! He deserves to keep flopping on the sofa, begging for more food (Target organic spring mix, specifically), and chewing the baseboards…

Anyone who knows me knows that he isn’t “just a rabbit”, he is my entire world. I’d sell the clothes on my back for him. Teddy was surrendered in a horrendous state when he was just a baby. With the help of incredible vets, he miraculously survived. When I saw him, I just knew I was meant to look after him and love him forever. I have no doubt that he is a very strong boy and will fight this.

Right now, I’d like every medical decision to be based on what gives Teddy the best possible chance at recovery. But with ongoing specialist consultations, imaging, medications, and potential procedures ahead, I am worried my ability to fund his care could quickly become depleted. I have always ensured I have funds available for his care, but as he is considered an exotic pet, specialist treatment can be extremely costly here as the last few days have shown.
