Team T-Bug from Twain Middle School has accomplished something truly remarkable. After seven years of hard work, creativity, and teamwork—including two years of virtual coaching during the pandemic—this inspiring group was selected as one of only 40 teams out of 213 to advance to the Virginia Odyssey of the Mind State Championship. Not only did they compete, but they placed first! Now, they have the honor of being one of just 8 teams selected across the entire state to represent Virginia at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals.
Odyssey of the Mind (OM) teaches students how to develop and use their natural creativity to become problem-solvers. Imagine being faced with a problem that requires an original solution. It can be frightening. Now imagine not being afraid to solve that problem – that is what OM members learn. This skill and self-confidence will carry over to all areas of their lives. OM brings the classroom to life as students apply what they learn and combine it with their interests and passions to solve unique open-ended problems. OM also emphasizes teamwork, budgeting, time management, public speaking, and so much more. This international program is designed to help students at all learning levels grow as individual learners, grow as team members, and reach their full potential.
In late May, Team T-Bug will travel to Ames, Iowa, to compete against teams from across the U.S. and 43 countries. The World Finals is an incredible opportunity for these students to showcase their creativity, resilience, and teamwork on a global stage. While their prop and set budget was modest, the costs to participate at the World Finals are much higher, including competition fees, transportation, lodging, and meals for the team and their families.
We are determined to do whatever it takes to get these talented students to the World Finals, but we need your help. Your support will help cover the essential costs of travel, lodging, and competition fees, making it possible for Team T-Bug to represent Virginia and make their dream a reality. We would be so grateful for your support—thank you for believing in our team!
