By making a gift to our campaign today, you will provide funding for HEART's expert educators to develop an environmental protection-focused early elementary school curriculum to accompany A Warbler's Journey, an exquisite bird migration and multicultural travelogue for children ages 5-8.
HEART is raising $5,000 to cover labor costs associated with the approximately 160 hours required to create a top-notch curriculum. The lesson guide will be freely available to the general public and is ideally suited for use in schools, youth programs, and home learning environments.
With poetic language from ornithologist Scott Weidensaul, a New York Times Bestselling Author and Pulitzer Prize Finalist, and lush paintings by Nancy Lane, illustrator of more than 24 picture books, A Warbler's Journey explores the beauty and perils of a yellow warbler's first migration from Nicaragua to Canada. This captivating story unfolds from the central character's "bird's eye" perspective and offers concrete ways for young people to take action that benefits our endangered natural world. The book will be published in May 2022 by The Gryphon Press.
HEART's five-lesson curriculum guide will lead young learners on a parallel journey of their own to help build their understanding of and connections to environmental stewardship, animal protection, and social justice issues.
HEART's team of expert educators will develop unique lesson content and activities tailored to the story and aligned with multiple sets of national education standards. Lesson topics will include:
- Bird (Yellow Warbler) Migration and Behavior
- Ecosystems and Food Webs
- Appreciation for Cultural Diversity
- Organic Agriculture and Fair Trade
- Climate Change
Courtesy of The Gryphon Press, the ten most generous donors to this project will receive a complimentary printed copy of A Warbler's Journey, complete with full-color illustrations, upon publication. (The accompanying lesson guide HEART is developing will be available for free to the general public.)
Donors of $50 or more may choose to have their names appear in the Acknowledgments section of the lesson guide HEART is developing to accompany the book. (We also welcome anonymous donations.)
