I never imagined needing to ask for help, but my family urgently needs support.

My mother, Tauheedah, my father, Baba Isa, and my younger sister, Zakiyyah, were in a terrible car accident while driving from Baltimore to North Carolina for our annual family reunion. Another vehicle collided with them on Interstate 85 near the NC/VA state line.

The impact struck the passenger side where my mother was sitting, leaving the car spinning and badly damaged. Although they were able to make it out of the vehicle, my mother immediately began feeling dizzy and weak. She was rushed to Maria Parham Health Hospital, where a CT scan revealed a traumatic brain injury—a subdural hematoma (a blood clot on her brain).

Because the hospital wasn’t equipped for brain surgery, she was airlifted by helicopter to Duke University Hospital, where surgeons operated right away to save her life.

After surgery, my mother regained some consciousness but had to remain in the Neuroscience ICU for nearly a week with a drainage tube in her head while under close observation. Her motor skills and cognitive abilities have heavily been affected.

Now that the drainage tube has been removed, she is being closely monitored by hospital staff and will soon begin rehabilitation, though we are still uncertain of when that will begin. At this point, we must also decide whether she will undergo rehab in North Carolina or be medically transported back home to Maryland.

If you know Tauheedah—and I know many of you do—you already know she is one of the most kind-hearted people you’ll ever meet.

Our family is facing unexpected medical, hotel, and travel expenses as we do everything possible to remain close by and care for her during this difficult time.

My father, Isa, who is 88 years old, is also struggling in the aftermath of the accident. He suffered whiplash and has been experiencing a foggy mental state. With my mother usually managing the family’s finances, this has left him especially shaken and vulnerable during an already difficult time.

Just one week in the Neuroscience ICU can cost tens of thousands of dollars, not including the emergency brain surgery and medevac helicopter transport.
