Taters is my 6-month-old Belgian Malinois mix rescue. During a training session, she landed with her rear paws oddly, and her left hind leg twisted to the side, causing injury. After seeing that she went from favoring the leg and limping to not putting any weight on it at all, we took her to the vet, where they performed an examination to check for a sprain and radiographs to check for a possible break. What they found was worse.
There is indeed a break in part of her knee joint, and cartilage/connective tissue has come detached. The way they explained it, were the gap in the break not so severe, a brace might've worked, but the extreme gap requires surgery. The location and severity of the break, in combination with her quadrucep muscle connecting above the break means that even minimal use of the leg could worsen the break.
We have made the decision to follow the vets/surgeons advice and proceed with the surgery. After an initial consult with the surgeon, the cost is at least $6000; but there could be additional costs depending on any additional findings during the surgery, and post-operation care/therapy would be an ongoing expense.
All donations go explicitly to these costs.
