Hello Family & Friends.
As many of you may know, this year I will be completing my Sophomore year at Saint Joseph's University (SJU) in Philadelphia. I am majoring in Childhood Studies and minoring in Creative Writing. It is with great excitement that I share with you all the news that I was recently accepted into SJU's Summer Scholars Program and will be spending 6 weeks studying in South Africa.
The SJU Africa Summer Program offers students an opportunity to study the culture, economics and politics of pre- and post-apartheid South Africa through lived experiences. I will spend this coming June and July learning in Johannesburg, Durban and Rosendal. My project objective is to create a resource of varied creative writing mediums to help educators better engage with BIPOC students.
I will read, analyze and catalog several literature pieces to gain perspective on BIPOC youth; "The Freedom Writers Diary" by Erin Gruwell, "Monkeys Like You" by Morgan Jenkins, "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria" by Beverly Daniel Tatum - to name a few. I will use my findings to create original pieces of work, that will include poetry, creative non-fiction pieces and visual art, then draft a list of resources specifically designed to support our Black and brown students in the classroom. Click HERE to read my full proposal.
Your investment in me today can be the start to building the forest that will one day shade our next generations. Thank you in advance for your giving.
