Tank, our 10-year-old Wapoo (Chihuahua / Poodle), has always been a happy boy. This Monday I noticed he wasn't able to keep his back legs under himself which was of great concern. We took him to the emergency vet immediately and they said that he was able to still push himself up and bear weight. They sent us home with some pain medication, so we were hopeful this would help. Tuesday he didn't seem to get any better if anything, worse. By Wednesday, Tank was unable to stand at all, so we rushed him back to the ER. They gave us stronger meds and said he was still showing leg strength, although he was unable to stand.

Last night, my usual vet called and informed us that his legs would not work, due to IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease). This disease is prevalent in small dogs because of their short stature and long bodies. It occurs when the inside of the disc (nucleus pulpous) prolapses and "pinches" the spinal cord. The vet suggested an MRI to locate the problem and possible surgery because of his semi-paralysis. The chances of recovery are best the quicker he gets treatment. For now, he is only taking anti-inflammatory and pain medication as well as complete bed-rest. We've been researching for the costs and the MRI would start at $3,000 depending on the dog's size and weight. We're hoping to be able to pay for the MRI so that we can determine our best course of action. In terms of surgery, the type of surgery needed for Tank's disease is between $8,000 to $12,000.

With this surgery, Tank has an 80% to 90% chance of walking again. This is why I cannot relent at least trying to do whatever we can to help him.

To get back to his previous quality or better quality of life and being a happy, healthy dog, he is going to require an MRI, spinal surgery and therapy, etc. Please help us help Tank. Any help goes a long way!

Words can’t describe how much he means to us, the love we have for him, or how thankful we will be when he is back to possibly walking, playing, and being his usual self. Thanks so much for your time and for any contribution that you are able to give. I'm a desperate man.

Love Steve, Deb, Tank and Cedes.
