Hi, my name is Tania Jaramillo. I am a writer and artist who until recently lived in New York City and had to relocate for my safety. My work has been featured at Ori Gallery, the Jewish Museum in New York City, IdiotMachine in Brooklyn and most recently in Hobart Magazine by Short Flight/Long Drive Books.
In 2024, I received a prestigious fellowship from NYU to complete a masters degree in my field. I relocated to New York as a result, and though I faced difficulty, was determined to make this a success. Sadly, my time at NYU was immediately complicated by the need to file a title ix case against a visiting professor.
Unfortunately, the disruption to wellbeing did not end there.
Two months later, I began to receive harassing messages from an author at the time residing in New York named Joe Buck. Despite my attempts to discourage this behavior, the harassment continued, always of a sexual and sometimes of an explicitly threatening nature. A month and a half after this began, I was raped by this individual.
Over the past year, his friends have led a coordinated campaign to harass me into silence, including persistent harassment online, cornering me in person at events and bringing me to places where he would be in order to torment me. Throughout my involvement with Joe Buck's social circle, I was raped and sexually exploited by three more individuals who aided and protected each other. Two months ago, I obtained evidence of patterned coordination by this individuals against myself and other victims, employing stalking methods to continue targeting me, not just online but in my physical neighborhood and surroundings. It was then that I knew I had to leave this situation and find safety.
Since then, I have been living in Berlin where I have social connections and some support network, but in terms of financial resources I am on my own. I was on a full scholarship and had taken out loans to support myself in New York, and my family's ability to help is extremely limited. As I have full working rights in the EU by dual citizenship, I have been actively looking for work and am continuing to do so while freelancing. Recently I have been in poor health and had to visit the hospital for an infection that had severely spread through my body, so I have also had to prioritize caring for myself.
This fund is to help me get on my feet as I secure full time employment, pay for medical treatment and begin therapy (which I need to pay for at full price while I obtain health insurance) in order to address the deep impact of surviving this series of traumatic events.
As a token of gratitude, I am happy to send (signed) advance copies of my chapbook. I have been working on my writing for years and would love to share it with you.
Anything you can spare would help someone who has been put through horrific abuse put their life back together safely and securely. Thank you for reading.
