For the last six years, Taco Libre has been more than our business. It’s how we support our family, how we connect with our community, and one of the biggest pieces of our lives.

After the recent hurricane hit Kauaʻi, we were fortunate that our homes and families were safe. Unfortunately, our food trailer wasn’t as lucky.

Once electricity was restored, we began discovering the damage. Rain had entered through damage in the roof and reached our electrical system. Our electrical switch box was damaged, our ceiling lights stopped working, and our commercial refrigerator turns on but no longer cools properly. We also lost food and produce.

The result is simple: right now, Taco Libre cannot operate normally.

While all of this was happening, though, there were families across Kauaʻi dealing with their own losses. We decided we needed to do what we could to help.

We held two community relief events, fed local families affected by the hurricane, collected donations including food, water, baby supplies and hygiene products, and helped raise and distribute approximately $1,200 directly to local families.

We’re incredibly proud that we were able to be there for our community. Kauaʻi has supported Taco Libre since we opened, and when our island was hurting, helping was simply what we felt we needed to do.

Now we find ourselves in the difficult position of asking for help ourselves.

We are currently working to determine the full extent of the hurricane-related damage, obtain professional inspections and estimates, and figure out what it will take to safely get Taco Libre operating again.

Donations will help with repairs to the roof, electrical system, lighting and refrigeration, replacing what was lost, and getting our food trailer back up and running.

We have also begun the insurance claim process. At this point, we do not know what insurance will ultimately cover or how long that process will take. As we receive professional estimates and learn more about the damage, we want to remain transparent with everyone supporting us.

We’ve spent years feeding Kauaʻi. After the hurricane, we did everything we could to keep feeding and supporting our community even while our own business was hurting.

Now we’re asking for a little help so we can open those doors again, fire up the grill, and get back to doing what Taco Libre does best, feeding people!
