The aftermath of Hurricane Helene has devastated a lot of lives in Florida recently, but for one couple, it’s compounded some difficulties they were already going through. Symbria and Bart Bartley live in St. Pete Beach and recently Symbria was diagnosed and started treatment for thyroid cancer. In addition to that life event, two weeks ago Symbria lost her job of 20 years; and now the storm surge and flooding from Hurricane Helene saw four feet of water in their house. They have literally lost EVERYTHING! Both of their vehicles were flooded and totaled. Everything in their home is ruined: all of their furniture, all of their clothes, appliances, everything. What wasn’t underwater has been damaged by mold and has to be discarded.
Symbria, her husband Bart, and their two pups survived and are thankful, but they’re beyond overwhelmed. I’m starting this modest GoFundMe to hopefully provide some money so they can buy cleaning supplies, clothes, shoes, furniture, etc. Cleanup efforts and construction to get their home back in livable condition are going to take months and will add to their stress on top of what they’re already battling and going through. Any amount you can donate would be much appreciated. I think the world of Symbria and Bart and wanted to do something to help them out! Please consider making a donation. Thank you for your consideration!
UPDATE 09/30 - Symbria got a new laptop today and got it set up in time for two job interviews tomorrow! Her previous laptop was ruined in the flood. She and Bart have temporary accommodations at a local hotel for 2 weeks provided by Symbria’s former employer; this was a very generous gift they really appreciate! Bart’s employer has loaned them two used cars to drive temporarily, which is also very generous and one they very much appreciate. Bart is busy focusing all his efforts on emptying the contents of their home now that flood waters have receded. In addition to searching for a new job and prepping for job interviews, Symbria has been busy calling their insurance company, FEMA, and contractors for gutting and rebuilding their home. Symbria really needs to focus on her mental and physical health as she is still recovering from her recent thyroid surgery following her cancer diagnosis. Thank you so much to all who have donated! Symbria & Bart are touched and humbled by your generosity and thoughtfulness! They have been through so much the past couple months, and the hurricane damage was beyond devastating.
