I'm jumping in the frozen baltic sea in Helsinki on 7th March to help raise money so people with an intellectual disability in Sydney's Inner West can continue playing sport in 2021-22.
$500 to get me in the water. Every $50 raised after that adds 1 second to my time in the water. All money goes directly to Special Olympics Inner West Club.
The background:
I lead a Lions club, a volunteer community service organisation in Sydney's inner west region. The primary cause we support is the local Special Olympics Sydney Inner West Club. The club is completely run by volunteers and they run basketball, tenpin bowling, tennis and soccer for your everyday people with an intellectual disability. They're not elite athletes going to the Paralympics, they're your everyday kids and adults just keeping fit and hanging out with mates. 2020 was tough on everyone and COVID has been very isolating for our people as a lot of them are in the high risk category. These times make it hard to find sponsors and has impacted our ability to run our typical fundraising events - trivia nights, comedy shows, BBQs, etc.
To put it straight - we're looking for donations. To give you an idea of the kinds of costs the Special Olymipcs Club incurs:
- $140 per week for bowling (45 weeks per year)
- $1,500 per quarter for basketball court fees
- $1,700 per competition (average 3 per year), covering accomodation, hiring a bus and event registration fees
Now, I'm a few thousand kilometers away in Finland and I wondered how I could my club help out. Inspired by the frozen baltic sea a few hundred meters from my apartment, I'm going to do an ice swim on Sunday March 7th as Finnish winter ends to encourage donations. I will live-stream it on Facebook.
All help is appreciated, whether its donations, or just commenting, liking or sharing this post to increase its social media reach. It all contributes to helping our athletes with intellectual disabilities in Sydney's inner west get back out there and continue sport this year.
Note, weather pending or if the temperature warms too much, I may shift the date earlier to 28th February. I'll keep you all posted though - expect me to share this a few times over the coming weeks :)
