The Swenson Dark Knights high school chess team is more than just a group of players—it’s a family. For many of our students, including foster kids and those with special needs, the team provides a sense of belonging and camaraderie that they may not find elsewhere. Chess is their passion, and it gives them a chance to use their minds as their greatest weapon. Our team works hard both on and off the board, fundraising by selling pretzels and team merchandise, and maintaining good grades to stay eligible to play.

This year, our team is excelling in local leagues and has earned the chance to compete at the state and national level. Unfortunately, the nonprofit organization that usually supports us has lost its grant funding, leaving us without the resources we need to attend these important tournaments. We are seeking help to cover transportation, entry fees, hotel rooms, and food for the state tournament, as well as flights, entry fees, hotel rooms, van rental, and food for the national tournament in Chicago. National tournaments are rarely funded, and this year’s opportunity is especially meaningful for our dedicated players.

Your support will help our students experience the excitement of traveling to new places, competing at a higher level, and building memories that will last a lifetime. By contributing, you’re not just helping us reach our goals—you’re inspiring young people to strive for excellence and showing them that their hard work matters. Please help the Swenson Dark Knights make this year unforgettable and encourage more students to join a program that opens doors to incredible opportunities.
