Help Sweet Dee, a Rescued House Hen, Fight for Her Life
Sweet Dee has been through more in her short life than most animals ever will. Born on a factory farm, she was bred to grow abnormally large in just a few weeks—part of an industry that prioritizes speed and size over the health of the animal. Like so many others, she was never meant to live past 42 days. But Sweet Dee survived.
She ended up on the streets of New York City, crammed in a crate, intended for religious slaughter. That’s where she was found and rescued, and soon after, she came home with me to begin a new life as a beloved house hen.
For the past 2.5 years, Sweet Dee has lived a life filled with love, comfort, and care. But she’s faced many health challenges along the way—complications that stem from how her body was engineered by the industry. And recently, her condition worsened to the point where I had to rush her to an emergency animal hospital. She was placed in an oxygen chamber, underwent multiple tests and procedures, and had to stay overnight. Leaving her there broke my heart.
She’s home now, but we’re still battling a serious infection—and facing the harsh reality that this may be something we can’t fully cure.
Sweet Dee’s body has been fighting against itself her whole life. Birds like her are bred to be so unnaturally large that many suffer organ failure or lose the ability to walk within weeks. She is one of the rare survivors. One of the lucky few who was rescued and got the chance to be loved.
This year has been incredibly difficult financially. Between planned expenses and unexpected bills, things have been tight. I’ll continue doing everything I can for Sweet Dee, even if it means putting her medical bills on credit cards. But if you’re able to help—whether through a donation or simply sharing her story—it would make a world of difference.
More than anything, I hope this fundraiser brings awareness to the cruelty of an industry that breeds animals into lives of pain and disability. Sweet Dee is more than a survivor—she’s a symbol of hope, love, and resilience.
Thank you so much for supporting her.
*For anyone who donates we are working on making a Sweet Dee sticker to mail out to you to thank you for your donation*
