Svetlana’s Story – A Mother’s Fight for Life
This is a story about resilience, a mother’s love, and an ongoing fight for life in the face of devastating illness.
Nothing suggested that tragedy was coming. Svetlana and her family were expecting their second child—a baby girl. The child was born healthy. But soon after, Svetlana received a life-changing diagnosis.
She was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Treatment for this aggressive cancer required intensive chemotherapy. During treatment, Svetlana suffered a severe stroke, which left the entire right side of her body paralysed. She lost her speech and her ability to swallow.
In her early thirties, Svetlana became permanently disabled. She lost more than 30 kilograms and could no longer manage basic daily tasks. The strain proved too great for her marriage, and her husband left.
Despite everything, Svetlana did not give up.
After a year of exhausting rehabilitation, she learned to stand again—using a quad cane with her left hand. Her right arm remains non-functional, and her speech is still very limited. The losses have been immense, but she continues to fight for one reason above all else: her children.
For 13 years, Svetlana has been fighting largely on her own. She survives on a disability pension, without family support nearby. Her parents live in Russia and rely on a modest pension themselves. Step by step, with small but meaningful progress, she continues to fight for the chance to live independently and be present as a mother.
At this stage, conventional medical treatment has reached its limits. Her doctors have advised that supportive and alternative rehabilitation therapies are her best remaining option. These treatments are not covered and come at a significant cost.
How You Can Help
We are raising funds to support Svetlana’s ongoing rehabilitation and treatment, with the goal of improving her mobility, independence, and quality of life.
Total amount needed: AUD $9,600
This is why we are asking for help from the wider community. Australians understand the power of pulling together when someone is doing it tough. Even a small contribution can make a real difference.
Our hope is simple: to help Svetlana one day walk without a cane and hold her children with both arms again.
Every donation matters.
All medical documentation is available and verified. This is a genuine and urgent appeal.
Thank you for taking the time to read Svetlana’s story and for any support you are able to offer.
